Tanya Alexander

Tanya Alexander, originally from St. Louis, MO is a high school valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa graduate of St. Louis University's theatre program. It was in school that her love for poetry and literature began. A diverse performer, actress, dancer, poet, musician, writer and voice over artist, Tanya found her primary inspiration in the life and words of Dr. Maya Angelou. A lover of all genres of music, particularly Afro-beat, Hip Hop and House, Tanya began playing and studying music at the age of 9. While working and appearing as an actress and dancer in countless television, radio, film and theatre productions, Tanya continued writing poetry and began performing spoken word at the infamous Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City. After some years and a move across country, Tanya began street performing on the beaches in Los Angeles and has since performed in the subways of New York City, Times Square and the Hollywood's Walk of Fame. She has graced the stages of Da Poetry Lounge, The Laugh Factory, Spoken Funk, The Comedy Union and many other comedy clubs and poetry forums. She released her first album, Pieces of Tanya...A Spoken Word Project in 2008 and won a Hollywood Black Film Festival Award for Best Music Video for the piece '1 Out of 10'. Her sophomore album, INSIDE...A Spoken Word Project, was inspired by the affect of her words on audiences and their affect on her (particularly those on Venice Beach). INSIDE poses the question, "Inside, outside, outside, in...where do I begin?"
Tanya was honored with the keys to the city of her hometown, Jennings, MO and has also won an NAACP Theatre award. She lives by the self-written credo: "Of the Strong & Trustworthy a Champion is Found. My Life, My Way, Unbound…"
