Terrence Richburg

TERRENCE RICHBURG

A native Washingtonian talent renowned for his God-given musicianship, from an early age multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Terrence Richburg has amazed audiences with his adaptable, authenticated style and "smooth" delivery. Richburg is an accomplished recording artist who comes with a wealth of knowledge of all musical styles and genres as well as the music industry. He has performed throughout the country and is characterized by his peers as "The Quincy Jones of Gospel," "a musician's musician," and "a producer's producer." Terrence chronicles a vast musical history in the Gospel, Jazz, and Gospel-Jazz communities, having worked with such notables as Richard Smallwood & Vision, Maurette Brown Clark, Vanessa R. Williams, Marcus Johnson, Alyson Williams, Cee Cee Michaela, Yolanda Adams, Kim Jordan, Jeremiah Murphy, Aretha Franklin, The Winans, Jennifer Holliday, Tramaine Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, Isaiah Thomas, James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar, Ben Tankard, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, Phillip “Doc” Martin, Spur of The Moment, and many others.

Son of John & Wilhelmina Richburg, known as Atlantic recording artists The Richburg Singers, and nephew of jazz legend and co-founded the East Coast Jazz Festival, Ronnie Wells, Richburg is a prolific composer, lyricist, writer, poet, vocalist, arranger, orchestrator, producer, director, pianist, keyboardist, electric and acoustic guitarist, percussionist, 4/5/6/7-string bassist, recording engineer and the list goes on. Terrence has written, produced and performed musical soundtracks for several videos, theme songs and music beds for radio stations and jingles for major corporations, including D.C.’s WYCB and Heaven 1580, as well as Marriott. He's also been called on as a Musician/MD for theater and musical productions including "Lord I'm Coming Home," "Dream Girls," "The Wiz," "Ain't Misbehavin!" "Wait ‘Til the Fat Lady Sings," "God's Trombones," "City at Peace," "Where Eagles Fly, " along with other events such as the Washington Performing Arts, music award shows, AIDS and Cancer fundraisers, benefits for “Katrina” and “Tsunami” victims, and many other prestigious events. He has enjoyed much success with his Gospel Jazz group, R&R, with the release of their debut CD, Ascension, featuring Howard Riley, Jr. on saxophone and Terrence on 7-String bass, vocals, and several other instruments. In 2007, R&R opened for GRAMMY Award winner CeCe Winans. However, Richburg's most recent group, Terrence Richburg & The Experience, has generated wide acclaim during their live performances, featuring Terrence in his element on bass, guitar, keyboards, and vocals, as the Spirit leads—sometimes with an amazing one-man duet on bass and keys or other instruments simultaneously. Both groups have offered the very best in Inspirational Jazz and uplifting Gospel Jazz music. He dropped a Christmas single entitled “In One Night” featuring his wife, renowned songstress Kathy Richburg, and has blazed the stage with such incredible jazz greats as Gerald Albright, Steve Cole, and The Marcus Mitchell Project. Terrence’s 7-string bass talents are featured on recent CD releases by Robert Person – Soul Sanctuary (2011), and Kim Jordan – Uncommon (2012). Richburg was also honored by The DC Area Musicians Fellowship and presented the very first annual 2013 Treble Cleft Award for his extensive achievements in Gospel music and church music ministry.

2014 and 2015 were very busy years for Terrence as well. In April, Richburg was commissioned to write the music and record the brand-new Prince Georges Community College school song, Victorious. Debuted in October, the song received rave reviews from PGCC faculty and college officials. Also in 2014 and 2015, Terrence had the opportunity to MD and minister with Praise & Worship recording sensation, Shannon Wexelberg, for the ACSI-NEXUS conference hosted at Woodstream Church, broadcasted world-wide. In addition, Richburg reconnected with nationally acclaimed Jazz Saxophonist and long-time friend, Phil French, to record and produce their 1st full CD project together, Everlasting… featuring Terrence Richburg, which was released under the RichEscape Music label in January 2015. The CD features an array of compositions and arrangements all written by Terrence, along with his prolific performance on all other instrumentation, instrumental solos, and vocal leads and background vocals. Ever since the release, Everlasting has been receiving rave reviews from listening audiences everywhere, both nationally and internationally. Cuts from Everlasting have been a regular feature on Smoothjazz radio stations all over the world. In addition, industry icons including Ben Tankard, Jean Carne, Norman Connors, and Steven Ford offered glowing reviews of the project. Everlasting received five 2016 Rhythm of Gospel Award, a 30th Annual 2016 Washington Area Music Award (WAMMIE) and was accepted for nomination in several categories for the 58th GRAMMY Awards. Recently, Terrence was a 2016 featured artist along-side such national artists as Carolyn Malichi and Rare Essence at the “Music at the Monument” concert series held at the Sylvan Theatre and Carter Barron in Washington, DC in support of veterans, post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, youth development, and theatre renovation programs.

In the world of literature, Terrence is a gifted poet and freelance writer having written reviews as well as articles for the Dr. Bobby Jones online magazine, GospelCity.com, DCGospelNewsUpdate.com, The D.C. Gospel News Update E-zine and The Tehillah Report published by Tehillah Enterprises, Inc. Richburg has also written dozens of articles for his own online E-zine publication, JazzGospelCentral.com. Terrence is well sought after as an industry authority and resource for all things Gospel Jazz. Richburg’s book release, Intimacy: Missing "Peace" in the Puzzle of True Love & Close Relationships, marking his official debut as an author, was featured in the 2013 Frankfurt, Germany and Guadalajara, Mexico International Book Fairs and the 2014 Book Expo America in New York.

Terrence’s most recent works include unprecedented simultaneous 2018 releases of a brand-new literary work, Soul of a Poet’s Heart – Gallery of Poetry, Prose & Songs, and three new CD releases, including Gospel project, RichSpirit ONE – (Silver Anniversary Recording Release), Gospel Jazz project, Beyond Measure and Inspirational Jazz/Gospel R&B project, Portrait of Adoration. The two latter projects are under consideration in multiple album and song award categories for the Recording Academy's 61st Grammy Awards! Portrait of Adoration is featured on Smooth Jazz stations and charts globally and Beyond Measure presents a special R&B Jazz blend that has proven very popular as well among listening audiences and music lovers everywhere. Richburg is also working on several more releases including the My All and Work of Art Jazz project series, Gospel and Praise & Worship CD project series, Prayer & Praise, Inspirational R&B project, Intimacy: The CD (the companion music CD project to his book release), and many other extensive musical endeavors. Terrence is also teaming up with his wife, Kathy (whose vocal talents are featured on his latest 2018 releases) for several new solo and duet Gospel and Praise & Worship musical offerings in the very near future. Terrence truly relishes the world of recording music and writing, but his heart is endlessly drawn to the performance arena where he’s able to connect personally with his audiences everywhere doing what he loves best. Richburg’s goal and resolve are to get “all of the music” entrusted to him out to the public, or at least as much as possible so that “God’s work” can be seen, heard, felt and lived from within.

Terrence is the former Director of Music Ministry at Woodstream Church in Mitchellville, MD, where he served faithfully for the past seven and half years. And although he’s proud of RichEscape Music, the label Terrence started, securing a 2009 Stellar Award Nomination and several other award nominations, and his many other accomplishments, he proclaims accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior his most significant life accomplishment. You can catch Terrence performing nationally with his group, as a solo artist, with his wife Kathy, and with various artists ministering regularly on Sundays at various church venues and events, including his home church, Israel Metropolitan CME Church in Washington, DC.
