The August Madness

THE AUGUST MADNESS is the songwriting duo David Buntz (of Augustus Leroy) and David Collett (of Sweet and Tender Hooligans). The two Davids played music together back in their high school years in the 1980s in bands called "Film At Eleven" and "Blue Rumour" but upon graduating in 1989 and heading off to separate universities and careers, had a chance meeting in 2014 (some 25 years later!) at the NAMM show in Anaheim. Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" was all the rage at this time and after realizing that the time was ripe to revisit the old "vintage" sounds of the 60's, 70's and 80's and spin it into a 21st century style, they decided to give songwriting another shot together. For the next several years they emailed each other files back and forth with an array of musical sketches and ideas, of which led to the songs developed for their first release "Action At A Distance". Once the song selection was made they brought in veteran drummer Darrin Pfeiffer (of Goldfinger) and bassist Alexis Gonzalez into the studio to give a solid foundation to the otherwise swirling jungle of guitars and synths that make up the August Madness sound. Not only inspired by the great rock, pop, punk and indie music of the past 50 years, their style is strongly influenced by classical music (Collett is a classical guitarist) and also by the cosmic sounds and discoveries being made by the history of space exploration - from the Sputnik mission in 1957 to the recent Cassini mission. So this album in a sense is a dedication to all the great "voyagers" of the past - to the great musical minds and to the rockets and probes who have illuminated our minds over the past half century.
