The Floor Ensemble

The Floor Ensemble is a collaboration of many jazz musicians who have one additional thing in common: a musical relationship with the Floor family of Salt Lake City, Utah. Jerry Floor, saxophonist, clarinetist , band leader, and live music promoter, has led the premier 18-piece jazz big band in Utah since 1974, The Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra, which, over the years, has provided the perfect venue to establish relationships with great musicians performing in the area. In addition, in 2001, Jerry, together with former mayor Rocky Anderson, started the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival which, along with providing great live jazz for the city of Salt Lake, provided an annual venue for solidifying great friendships based on the bonds that form when creating America's music, jazz.

Jerry's daughter Emilee Floor, pianist, vocalist, and composer, now residing in Manhattan, has been performing six nights a week for the last 9 years in Peacock Ally at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Emilee's vocal stylizing, her fresh arrangements of jazz standards and modern popular songs, her unique ability to sing harmony to her improvised piano lines, and her command of the French language, bring delight to all who pass by her piano.

Jerry's son Greg Floor, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator, currently lives in Boston, MA where he works as the Director of Admissions at Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Greg is a first-call saxophonist with the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and performs occasionally with the Boston Saxophone Quartet and other groups in and around the Boston area.

Thus, the Jerry Floor family is the nucleus of this collaborative group. The Floor Ensemble "idea" has been around for years as Jerry, Emilee and Greg would talk about how fun it would be to record with each other and all of their musical friends they have made through the years. But it never came to fruition due to everyone's busy schedules and more recently because of their distance from each other.

However, in February of 2016, Greg and his wife Cassandra decided it was time to act! Greg called his dad and his sister and told them they have no say in the matter, that in June they would begin their first project together. Greg wrote and arranged the music, assembling a different cast of musicians for each tune. And on June 17, 2016, the first four tunes of the first album by The Floor Ensemble were recorded at David Evanoff Sound Designs in Salt Lake City, UT. Greg's 8 year old daughter, Sophia, and 5 year old son, Luke, also added their vocal talents to the project. After two more recording sessions in August and October of 2016, things were starting to sound great. But when famed jazz clarinetist, Eddie Daniels, the amazing Ellis Hall, and Byzantine chanter, Nektarios Antoniou, also agreed to be a part of it, they knew they had something special.

The Floor Ensemble, although a "new" group, is made up of seasoned Jazz musicians who have been collaborating together for the last 25 years in different settings. So you might say they've been together for years. Let it be known, that due to logistical conflicts, many others were left off of The Floor Ensemble's debut album, The Shoemaker's Children. But that's ok, there will hopefully be many more collaborations to come. Enjoy!
