The Outer Half

The Outer Half started when Dan Zalles, wanting a break from 10 years of writing and playing odd-metered instrumental music, decided he wanted to start writing old-fashioned songs again, with lyrics and vocals. He also had a dream that he would find a great female lead singer with a great attitude, similar musical tastes, and ear for harmony. And sure enough, his dreams came true when he found Jen Gill, fresh out of singing in a cappella groups, who was dying to get back into rock 'n roll. Jen and Dan started playing in Dan's garage, cranking out four or five songs an evening from their collective radio memories. Then, they found Doug Marks, who like Dan had crossed the rock and jazz worlds. The three of them started jamming. Scott Graves joined on bass but after cutting the tracks on the CD, he had to leave the band and Terry Rose took over. The band has performed live on the Edge of Insanity radio show and in many clubs and public events in the San Francisco Bay Area. They’re real crowd pleasers and that makes the organizers happy. For example, at Off the Grid events, the organizers have said repeatedly that people stick around longer when The Outer Half is playing. At a particular club, after hearing the band play just once, the owner was so impressed that she offered them regular monthly gig.
