Tobin Mueller

Tobin Mueller is a composer, playwright and interpretive pianist living in Connecticut, just outside New York City (his former home). His musical compositions range from post-bop Impressionist Jazz to Progressive Rock to Neo-classical to Broadway musicals.

Most recently, he has released a 2-volume Progressive Rock/Pop Fusion compilation: "WONDER" featuring appearances by Scott Rockenfield (Queensrÿche), Grammy winning guitarist Michael Hedges, Bob Piper (Pleiades), Japanese master guitarist Tadashi Togawa, The African Wêreld Choir, Aaron Paul, Mystified and more. A tour de force combining epic Prog with the intimate lullabies. A "can't miss" experience.

In 2018, Mueller released "the best reimagining of the greatest jazz standards in a decade". "Standard Deviations" is another 2_CD opus. Fresh arranging and top-tier musicianship. Players include: 3-time Grammy winner Paul Nelson (guitar), 4-time collaborator Woody Mankowski (saxes), drummers Lamar Moore (Lettuce) & Mike Nappi (J Geils Band), Kenny Cash (bass/production), more. 33 classic jazz tunes covered, 123-minute double album.

Perviously, Tobin has recorded several solo piano albums, jazz ensemble sessions and collaborations with musicians from around the world. He moves from genre to genre with ease, drawing from varied influences and eras. His music is restless yet beautiful, an eclectic style that synthesizes and originates.

Mueller has recorded with Grammy winners Dave Brubeck, Ron Carter, Michael Hedges, Donny McCaslin (last collaborator with David Bowie) and Paul Nelson (Johnny Winter Band), Janet Planet and more. He's played with Maynard Ferguson and collaborated with Jon Anderson (from Yes), Brian Welch ("Head" from Korn) and countless other musicians from around the globe. As an NYC Dramatist Guild playwright and lyricist, music from his Off Broadway show Creature (1998) found its way onto his award-winning jazz album Rain Bather (mixed at the legendary Sound City Studio).

As an interpretive pianist, Mueller has recorded inventive arrangements of Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel and used composers such as Aaron Copeland and Igor Stravinsky as inspirations for his jazz works. He produced a 5-disc Masterworks Trilogy that reshapes the great piano solos of old utilizing Mueller's unique musical voice.

Mueller's musical influences include Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John Taylor and McCoy Tyner. His acoustic piano stylings fit into the contemporary jazz field with such talents as Brad Mehldau, Fred Hersch, Liz Story, Gerald Clayton, Hiromi, David Lanz and Tigran Hamasyan. His progressive rock organ playing is reminiscent of both Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. His electric piano experiments are unique and defy easy categorizing.

Six of Tobin's musical dramas have seen Manhattan stages. His science fiction musical "Dreamless" formed the basis of his experimental progressive rock concept album, "Audiocracy: Revolution's Son." Songs from his off-broadway "Robin Hood" and "Runners In A Dream" have been included in some of his vocal/pop albums (see below). Tobin has also written several books, poetry collections, video games, blogs and reviews.

In 1994, Tobin was inducted into the United Nations' Global 500 Roll of Honor for his work with youth worldwide in the environmental movement. He has written a series of youth musicals for his touring troupe, CenterStage Productions, most notably: To Save The Planet.
