Van Colbert

I was born on February 7, 1955 in Willow Springs, Missouri in the cab of a pickup truck. I am the third of eight children by Joseph Truett Colbert and Verneica May Easley Colbert. Got my first banjo one Christmas when I was 13, Old Silvertone, dad bought at Nick’s Pawn Shop in West Plains, Missouri for $40. Dad taught me a few chords in the Standard C tuning and a two-finger roll. First tune he taught me was “Green Corn.” Heard Grandpa Jones in West Plains when I was probably 17; inspired me to learn clawhammer style.

Most of my bunch sing and play music, living in a rural area, and not much money, that’s one of the things we did as a family to entertain ourselves. I still play with my brothers and still use music as my primary way to relax, entertain myself, and pass the time away. If I’m not having to work, I’m playing the banjo or fiddle and driving my wife crazy…

I also record with Blackberry Winter and enjoyed playing on the Winter's Bone soundtrack.
