Wind

"Refreshing" is the word most often used to describe the music of WIND. The performing version of WIND currently consists of Nori & Barbie Kelley (residing in Myrtle Beach, SC), and newly added member Carly Rooks (from Tulsa, OK).

Born in Japan, but raised in Alabama from age 9, Nori is a veteran session musician who has worked with Jon Anderson (Yes), Jon Camp (Renaissance), Dave Hope (Kansas) and Will McFarlane (Bonnie Raitt / Muscle Shoals Swampers), among many others. CCM magazine once compared his guitar playing to both Mark Knopfler and Phil Keaggy. Nori has two projects released internationally by Mel Bay, "Basic Guitar Strumming & Fingerpicking (Book & CD)" and "Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 - Pop Version (CD)," both of which have been best sellers. He continues to do session work & teach private lessons from his home project studio, Forestgreen Studio.

Barbie Kelley hails from the Wilmington, Delaware area and comes from a large musical family. She began playing the flute at age 9, and now plays percussion and guitar as well. She has played & sung on many recording sessions. Her voice has a pleasant, almost Celtic-like quality, and has been compared by some to Natalie Merchant. Audiences love her flute playing, and WIND’s flute and guitar combination achieves nice results. Barbie has written a musical with Nori called “No Love, No Peace - The Musical, “ geared toward middle/junior high school students, dealing with issues such as bullying & suicide. It was debuted at AAST High School in Myrtle Beach, SC in 2017 and “WIND & Friends” released the musical soundtrack in 2018. Nori & Barbie hope to see it performed in schools everywhere in the near future.

Recently joining WIND as an intern on vocals & acoustic guitar is Carly Rooks. Carly was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is currently majoring in Music Business at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. From an early age, Carly played guitar in church and has experience leading elementary and youth worship bands. As an intern, Carly joined WIND on the 2018 and 2019 Japan Mission Tours, and toured with them in the spring and summer of 2019. She also contributed vocals & acoustic guitar on their latest album. Carly will be focusing on her education for the time being, perhaps joining WIND on occasion until the summer of 2020.

Doug Sturgill is the multi-bass & djembe player extraordinairre on most of the Wind studio recordings since 2013. Doug hails from western Virginia and grew up playing in church, all the while learning the licks of some of the top bassists of the day. Residing with his wife, Sherry, in the Myrtle Beach area, he was the bassist in the classic rock band 2ndWind (2017-18) with Nori, Barbie, Blake & Bethany Graham and Bill Hein. Doug has received many accolades from his peers, including world renown bassist Jon Camp. He is a master of the groove, and currently composes and releases his own work via Facebook videos.

Wind's music is an original mixture of prog rock, classic rock and folk, influenced by British artists like Pink Floyd, Mark Knopfler, Yes & Renaissance, as well as North American artists like Bruce Cockburn, The Allman Brothers & The Grateful Dead.

Their brand new album, released on November 1, 2019, is called “Incense,” and is a worship album - their first since 2006’s “Wa.” “Incense” contains 12 tracks ranging from the short call to worship, “Come Let Us Worship (from Psalm 95)” to the almost 14-minute progressive rock epic, “Instrument Of Worship,” which features Carly on lead vocals. Rich with the words from the Bible, most of the lyrics for this album were taken from scripture. “Incense” is available on CD as well as on all major internet outlets, with a companion EP titled, “Kaori (the Japanese word for incense)” to follow soon after with six of the songs from the album sung in Japanese!

Wind's 11th album, a progressive rock record called "Seasons," was released on July 5, 2016. The main body of work on this album is a concept piece which goes through the cycle of a year, from January to December. There are four additional tracks, one of which features Jon Camp of the renowned 70's British group, "Renaissance," on both bass and backing vocals. This is Jon's second guest appearance on a Wind album, who's signature bass sound was featured on two tracks of 2013's Wave.

WIND is available for your venue, whether it be a church, restaurant or private event. Having just returned from an eight event mission tour in Japan, the trio will be on the road this spring and summer. Nori & Barbie will also be performing all year as a duo in the Myrtle Beach area & vicinity.

"The...'Seasons' album is an absolute tour de force, both musically and spiritually. The musicianship would be hard to fault and Nori's writing seems to improve with each album - miss it at your peril." ~ Jon Camp - Renaissance & Roy Wood's Army

"(Nori’s) guitar playing stuns." ~ Doug LeBlanc - CCM Magazine

"WIND, presenting passionate music with high-flying flute, guitar acrobatics and killer chorus sections, seem to have no hard time proving they can win over even the average music listener." ~ Shawn M. Haney - All Music Guide

“...best flute & guitar music in the southeast.” ~ Borders Books & Music, Atlanta

“With the scene here in the UK currently picking up for progressive rock artists and artists with a folk and blues edge, the time could be right for WIND...they have the tools and the songs, they just need that little push...” ~ Nick Baldrain - Fireworks Magazine (UK)
