What Would Tilda Swinton Do

WHAT WOULD TILDA SWINTON DO

“It’s almost as if you took the vocals of Heart’s Nancy Wilson, or Blondie’s Debbie Harry, and combined that with the musicality of Hole”, the The Deli music magazine states about the new NYC-based, self-described “Lazy-Punk” band WHAT WOULD TILDA SWINTON DO. Their first music video for the single “Bikerbraut” is about to drop on July 27th. With lyrics like “You try to catch her but u can’t/ this big vibrating machine between her legs is all that she wants”, WHAT WOULD TILDA SWINTON DO, not only created an ambiguous love song for a mysterious heroine, but a hymn for badass-female bikers. And not even a month after that, on August 24th, the band’s first EP, simply called WHAT WOULD TILDA SWINTON DO, will be released on and performed live at the East Village’s Bowery Electric.

“The term 'Lazy Punk' means we are too lazy to be punks”, says the Austrian-Canadian lead singer Suzie Léger. “If you think about it, ‘being a punk’ is a lot of effort: The way you apply your make-up, the way you dress, the way you argue with people… We are just too lazy for that lifestyle.” However, WHAT WOULD TILDA SWINTON DO’s sound can definitely be recognized as a new statement in the traditions of 'punk rock'. Energetic in expression, eclectic and playfully changing genres within one song a few times is pretty much a common thread throughout their entire EP – kind of not lazy at all musically-speaking.

In 2016, Suzie Léger put out an ad on craigslist to find musicians and subsequently met the Brooklyn-native bass player, Jason Smith. He considers his roots in Soundtracks, Motown and Jazz. A few months after, Léger got her Italian colleague from acting school, Tania Kass, to join the band as the drummer and backing vocalist. Kass’ background is originally in musical theatre, but she is clearly a big influence on the band’s percussion-soaked sound. And last, but definitely not least, the Massachusetts-native, Tom Fiset, was brought into the group, playing guitar, synths and also providing backing vocals. “You can’t help but get caught up in the rolling guitar riffs” wrote the AnR factory music blog about their track “Kill” – also to be found on their upcoming EP...
Suzie Leger sums it up, “Our songs are about who we want to be or desire to be with, meshed up with morally very ambiguous fantasies... Online dating just isn’t doing it for us, so we make music instead.”
