Willow Flute Ensemble

You’ve heard a flute. You’ve heard a piccolo. But have you heard an alto flute? Much less a bass flute?

How about 10 of them at once?

Some compare the sound of a flute ensemble to the lush sonic experience of sitting inside a pipe organ (not that we recommend trying that). Others liken it to the many-working-to-sound-as-one quality of a choir of voices…except instead of baritones and sopranos, it’s big flutes and little flutes.

Boston-based Willow Flute Ensemble pushes boundaries, expanding the music available to flutes. For the Ensemble’s long-awaited second disc, World Winds, Music Director Orlando Cela arranged energetic and heart-wrenching folk songs from Venezuela and Romania; stately late-Baroque music from Germany; lush Russian choral music; and Spanish Renaissance music from Tomas Luis de Victoria. As Willow also frequently premieres new works by living composers, the disc includes the winner of WFE’s recent composition competition, Darius Mackie’s lyrical and compellingly rhythmic “Through the Intrinsic Forest.”

The wide range of genres represented on this album aptly proves that the unique sounds and capabilities of the flute are exceedingly well-suited to music throughout the world.

The Willow Flute Ensemble performs regularly in concert halls, churches, libraries and community events throughout Massachusetts and beyond. Whether it’s a seaside art gallery, a children’s concert, or an invited performance at the National Flute Association Annual Convention, audiences rave about the variety of styles, the energy, the flexibility of sound, and just plain fun of listening to those unusual flute sounds. Listen for yourself!
