Album Notes
Newbold has been writing music and performing live for too damn long for this to be his debut record. Born in Petaluma, in the north San Francisco Bay Area, the singing drummer has lived his entire life in various parts of California playing in bands and serving the song to the best of his ability. His slippery grooves and musicality coupled with his gritty vocals often draw comparisons to his idol, Levon Helm. "I just want to be one-hundred percent honest when I write and when I sing. Hopefully, the sincerity and the emotion comes across. This isn't some joke to me, this music is my life." When asked about his influences the artist states that they're all woven into the record and for the most part, pretty obvious. "They're blatant references to Warren Zevon, Jeff Tweedy, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Jerry Garcia, The Band, and many other legends of Americana, blues, rock- what have you, but mostly there's a story I'm trying to tell you about my life. My small towns, my big cities, my home state, and my country. I'm as proud to be American as anybody you might come across and, yeah, the Bear Flag is a symbol I salute and represent with every breath. I don't know if you'll hear all of that or not, but I assure you, it's in there." Pressed further to state a genre for his upcoming release Newbold balked: "Well...I went into the studio and told (Doug) Grean (co-producer, engineer) I had songs for an ethereal Alt. Country record, but I'm not sure if that's exactly how it came out or not. There's a bluegrass tune on there, some straight ahead rock, some folk... I know this, though. We made the record we wanted to make at every turn and we made it one song at a time. Maybe someone will even listen to it..." That part is still left to be seen, but before we left we asked if there was anybody special the man wished to thank. "There's a million people I'd love to thank and they all deserve it even more than they know, but most importantly, I want to dedicate this record to my wife, Adrienne, because without her I'd be lost and this record would never exist. She is my life and this record is a symbol of that life and a tribute to her."
