Alex Lopez

Alex Lopez’s self-titled debut album was finished in 2008 at the end of a long Massachusetts winter. The Seattle-born grunge scene is far away in space and time from here, but in listening to these tracks it won’t seem that way. Fans of bands like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden will definitely see their influence in Alex’s music, but the varied and solid compositions here stand out well on their own. When asked about his songwriting, Alex feels that songs “should capture that honest moment in a certain situation. Whether it's love, heartbreak, anger, frustration …when you're honest about it, it speaks for itself”. This sums up the defining thing that ties these differing tracks together, their lyrics all ring true with the real experience of the complex and conflicted emotions they express.

The album kicks off with “Wrong Way”, a good aggressive opener and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We get dark and brooding in a hurry just after in “Soap Box”, but there’s much more than just dark or angry stuff here. Just when you might have thought this was grunge as usual, the album brings out the haunting notes of "Strange" with its lulling background rhythm and piano riff accents. “Aware” brings the energy back up in the next track with a roaring condemnation of deceivers. “Going Down” gives us a solid upbeat intermission piece before a more extended exploration through truth and sorrow in the latter half. Alex’s vocals truly take the fore in the finale title “Okay”, weaving in and out of the to keep the energy peaked to the final note.
