Robert James Starr

On his new album, Light a Fire With Me, Robert James Starr treads the heart of the delta, up and down I-55, with tales of love won, love lost and the ups and downs in between. Fusing gospel-flecked southern soul with boogie-fried blues and echoes of the Hill Country sound, Starr's songs tell vivid stories of (mostly) fictional characters whose origins are all firmly based in reality. Born into a family of musicians going back three generations, Starr thought his early fascination with southern rock and a love of horn-heavy jazz would pave a career in the family business, but life had other plans and musical aspirations took a backseat until his professional life brought him to Mississippi in 2015. "When my work brought me to Mississippi, I felt a new energy in my musical self," he recalls. "There's something truly magical about the Deep South that re-kindled my love for southern music, in particular blues and gospel. I started listening to more straight-ahead blues players, the iconic stuff, and started connecitng with it more. By 2017 I felt it was the right time to start making records. Maturity-wise, I had to go through a lot of life to get there and feel confotable with it so I could write these songs. This record's a little lighter in tone than the first one, not as angry. It goes in a different direction musically too, playing with the blues in new and different ways. There are moments where things just happen and magic is the result." Light A Fire With Me captures that magic, distilling it from an array of influences into crystal clear, unfiltered blues.
