Ron Kalmakoff

Ron Kalmakoff was born and raised in Canora, Saskatchewan. At age 15, he took the brave leap to perform in public at a talent show in front of his home town. To everyone's amazement, this boy could sing! With a lot of encouragement from members of the community, Ron began entering talent competitions, community TV and performing with a local band as their guest vocalist.

As a young man, Ron wrote songs and recorded his first album project before age 20. That triggered airplay on local radio stations, which quickly led to provincial and national radio exposure across Canada. His musical career was born! There were national television gigs, including a feature on Ron's music. After forming his own band, Ron hit the performing circuit complete with concerts and special appearances.

While Ron was promoting his first album, an opportunity arose from a Nashville-based record label. Ron was in negotiations to join the record label but decided to walk away to pursue his career as an independent artist. To this day, he owns his musical identity.

1985 found Ron back in the studio with a new production team. Joined by producers Sandra Cuervo and Rod Salloum, he helped launch the label RSR Records. Sandra and Rod produced Ron’s next three albums, and Ron is forever grateful for their musical influence and career guidance. Their first project was an album that Ron released called Shadow Lady. A single release from the album, ‘Secret Light of Love’, which Ron wrote, charted well across Canada with the radio stations.

What followed next was one of Ron's biggest opportunities...

EXPO ’86 came calling and Ron was invited to perform 28 unforgettable shows.

He fell in love with the West Coast and decided to pursue his career in Vancouver. By mid-November, he had packed his guitar and a couple of suitcases and headed out with $800.00 in his pocket--and a one way plane ticket--towards his new life in Vancouver.

Two more projects followed in the late 80's and 90's. My Mother's Son and Kalmakoff were both released on RSR Records. Singles released from My Mother's Son and Kalmakoff helped Ron receive radio airplay not only in Canada, but also in the United States, England, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Australia. The DJs in Europe just loved Ron's sound and wanted more!

In addition, the album Soaring Spirit was a limited release of spiritual songs recorded for Ron's fans. Although not intended for commercial release, it involved award-winning producer Michael Creber. This professional alliance would spark more creative endeavours down the line.

In 1999, Ron released Journey of the Heart. The CD got off to a great start with the release of its first single ‘After the Lights Go Down Low’, but unexpected family priorities took Ron away from his music.

To date, Ron has released 9 singles to radio stations.

A highlight of Ron's career was in the year 2000. Ron returned back to his home town of Canora, Saskatchewan for a special Mother's Day concert. “It was a day for me to connect with my roots and see so many people who were an instrumental part of the start of my career.”

Ron now makes his home on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. He still maintains strong ties with people in Saskatchewan and also in Maple Ridge, BC, where he lived for over 12 years.
