Songwriting partners Drew Roger Conrad (vocals, guitars, programming) and Mark Zelen (bass, guitars, keyboards) established indie/ambient Los Angeles band ALSO with drummer Scotland Stephenson some few years ago. After two proper full-length studio albums and a handful of European tours, Stephenson returned to his native state of Georgia in 2012. Always open to change and inspiration, Conrad and Zelen have decided to not seek a new drummer, opting to further pursue their more spatial, experimental inclinations.

Chinese Ghost City, ALSO’s new EP, has become a special sonic journey in producing with wide-ranging collaborations: San Francisco's Magik*Magik Orchestra (Death Cab For Cutie, Jonny Greenwood) contributed strings and horns, Pete Min (The Airborne Toxic Event) has taken care of mixing, and pioneering mastering engineer John Golden (Swans, Sonic Youth, Sun Kil Moon) worked his own brand of magic at Golden Mastering in Ventura, CA.

ALSO’s sound might bring to mind such dreamy Californian acts as The Beach Boys, Mazzy Star or Red House Painters, with influential touches of British post-punk edginess and neo-psychedelic wistfulness, often culminating into a cinematic swell that bolsters their delicate, lyric-centered songwriting.

Why the name ALSO? The word itself implies possibility: the glass is half empty, true, but it is also half full. What one may see as a failure may also be understood as a learning experience, a means of improving oneself. The band name is meant to be a reminder that there is always more than one way to look at any given situation.
