Andreas Kern

Andreas Kern is a German pianist and composer who thrives on celebrating classical music in unconventional ways. A straightforward recording of Beethoven and Schumann has never been of interest to him. Instead, he set out to find his own, unique sound by using classical masterpieces as an inspiration to create more contemporary works of music. His recordings use the exquisite natural reverb of a recital hall to give the listener the true sense and enjoyment of a classical concert performance.

Born in South Africa, Andreas Kern studied piano in Cologne and Berlin with Günter Ludwig and Pascal Devoyon. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has extensive experience in Europe, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, China, Japan, India, and the United States.

One of Andreas' most successful concept shows is the PIANO BATTLE, which he co-created with fellow pianist Paul Cibis. Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance by two classy artists, the PIANO BATTLE is a unique concert experience that pleases both the eye and the ear.

In 2009, Andreas Kern conceived the critically acclaimed “arte lounge” for the French-German TV channel Arte. The monthly late night format breathes new life into the established rituals of classical music. In addition to featuring world-renowned stars, the show offers a platform for cross-over artists and performers from other genres. As the show's co-host, Andreas Kern has performed with musicians including Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capucon, Sol Gabetta, Sarah Chang, Vadim Repin, Nils Mönkemeyer, Elina Garanca, and Jörg Widmann.

Andreas Kern is also the "architect" of the Piano City Festivals, which initially brought together classical music enthusiasts in Berlin and featured more than 100 piano performances within one weekend. Since 2010, Piano City has branched out to other European cities such as Milan, Naples and Barcelona.
