Bryan Akipa

Bryan Akipa, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, Sisseton, South Dakota an Army veteran, elementary teacher, visual and performing artist, is an award winning traditional Native American flute player. His CDs have been, nominated for several Nammies or Native American Music Awards (NAMA), including honors for The Flute Player album, His Thunder Flute album also the Indie awards finalist, Eagle Dreams, Best Flutist, Best Male Artist. He was a featured player on My Relatives Say by Mary Louis Defender which won the NAMA for Best Spoken Word recording. Up to date a GRAMMY Awards nominee for his album Songs from the Black Hills, NAMA Best Male Artist, NAIIA Flute Player of the Year. In addition to being a premier Native American flute player, Bryan is internationally known for his craftsmanship of traditional red cedar flutes. When one hears the depth and age in sound of his instruments, the importance of this tradition becomes quite apparent. He is also a champion traditional dancer that tours with the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre. His performances and artwork informs others about his history, heritage, and culture. He is featured in the book Faces of Identity, Hands of Skill by Troyd Geist; Seeking a Vision by Don Doll; Ikche Wicasa Dakota Oyate by Alta Renville; Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Healthy Life Style calendar; Cover for Native Peoples Magazine; South Dakota Magazine cover; Indian Gaming magazine artist spot light. The artist and performers represented in these books and publications are among the finest in the nation. Bryan will be attending the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe , New Mexico working on a second bachelors degree in New Media Arts and teaching
