Chata Addy

Chata Addy was born in a musician family and raised outside of Accra, Ghana; on the Atlantic coast of West Africa where his rich background in both traditional and contemporary music, was nurtured

Settled down in Portland, Oregon since 1987, Chata Addy shares his love and knowledge of African music with adult and youth audiences by solo and group performing with his bands Susuma, educating young students traditional drumming & dancing as an Art and Culture instructor through the Young Audiences of Oregon. Over the years, Chata has performed and recorded with the likes of his uncle, Obo Addy, King Sunny Ade, and many others. During his spare time, he also offered African drum workshops around Oregon and Washington.

At the Young Audiences of Oregon, Chata works with a variety of community based youth organizations, and providing artistic programming for schools throughout the NW region.

Chata Addy dedicates his life as a story teller, songwriter, traditional African dancer, drummer, choreographer, and teacher of the arts and culture from the West African traditions as to remind himself of home and what he brought to his new country through his music. His work is about the peaceful and aroma of life in the beautiful nature of his homeland, the unity of all beings and what it is like to be a true freedom-fighter.
