Dragging the Mule

¤ ¬ ±: Bio

Dragging The Mule is the current project of Dogpile frontman, William Paul Adams with the support of Catherine Phillips and Trevor Black. Adams has a rich musical history beginning in the 80’s as bass player for industrial/art band Kitten With A Whip. Known for using bits of animal carcasses and blood and occasionally setting fires in clubs during their performances, KWAW was a mainstay on the Toronto and Montreal music scene from 1984 to 1989. Performing with bands like The Swans, L7 and GG Allin, their career took a positive turn after an illegal performance titled “Slight Fault” in an abandoned factory that was attended by Kevin Cey and Dwayne Goettel of Skinny Puppy. The show, which featured guitars swinging over the heads of the audience, fire and trashed instruments suitably impressed Cey and Goettel enough to be asked to join the upcoming Skinny Puppy tour for Vivisect VI. When their label Nettwerk Records found out, this was nixed as a then unknown Nine Inch Nails had already been booked. Upon the tours’ return to Canada, Nine Inch Nails was asked to depart in favour of KWAW for the last three shows. In 1989, Adams disbanded KWAW, their last performance opening for Ministry on the Land Of Rape and Honey tour show in Toronto. At this show, upon learning of the possibility of a fire during its performance, KWAW was refused stagetime. When this information made its way to Al Jourgensen, the club was told Ministry would not perform unless KWAW was allowed to go ahead with its show.

In 1990, Adams began recording demos under the name Dogpile after seeing the word emblazoned across a photo from a male porno flick at a sex shop in Chicago. Dogpile was subsequently signed by Belgium based Kk Records and the first album “Revved Up, Wiped Out, Battered, Shattered Creamed and Reamed” was released. A very well received appearance at the Amsterdam alternative music festival Tegentunen in 1992 at which a lengthy interview with NME was conducted led to the release of “Black Fag”. This album received accolades from press throughout Europe including a KKKK rating from Kerrang! Magazine. A successful European tour hitting 10 countries followed. In 1993 Dogpile was featured on the cover of Toronto gay magazine “Xtra”. The band appeared at the New Music Seminar in New York with Canadian labelmates Numb in 1994 and subsequently released the E.P, “Live Butt Plugged” produced and engineered by Adams. Another European tour took place featuring two new members. Recorded tracks for a follow up to “Live Butt Plugged” were lost and the bands last appearance was at the 1996 Toronto Gay Pride festival.

After an unsuccessful attempt at running a record label and in a rare instance of artist ripping of label, taking Kk Records for a substantial amount of money, Adams took ill, the band stopped rehearsing and nothing new was released until the 2005 EP “A History of Silence” was quietly put out as a limited edition CDR under the moniker Dragging The Mule. Dragging The Mule have released 4 records to date, been proclaimed “the Godhead” by alternative artist/musician Lydia Lunch, and been asked by NY escort agency queen Kristin Davis to provide a track for her 2010 campaign to be elected governor of NY State.

In addition to Dragging The Mule, Adams is working with various other musicians, some willing participants, others on a stolen guerilla tactic basis as “The Whole Death Catalogue”.

Early in 2011, the first new Dogpile track since 1994 will be released in digital form only. Promising to be every bit as heavy and aggravating as previous releases, the new track, “Broke Upon The First Stress” is a fresh and filthy new beginning for Dogpile.
