Edwin Orion Brownell

Over the last three decades Edwin Orion Brownell has been electrifying audiences in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and across North America. Born in Ottawa to musical parents, he started playing piano at the age of four and two years later began his training with the Royal Conservatory.

After a successful international career playing and touring with rock groups (including his own ensemble “Edwin & the Bedouins”) Orion returned to his roots, focusing on the romantic repertoire and specializing in the music of Chopin and Tchaikovsky.

In 1995 he began working with ballet companies (most notably Ballet Divertimento in Montreal) and began improvising pieces for the dancers which were later turned into his earliest classical compositions.

This focus on composition lead to the release of his first classical albums; “Maimonides Pops” and “Music of the Dance.” Although the two releases contained classical covers and ballet classics, these CDs also featured eleven original works which were premiered at Place des Arts in Montreal in 2005.

Over the next two years Orion completed “Journey of the Spirit,” a double CD of entirely original music, including his tour-de-force “The Ein Gedi Suite.” This disc was launched at the Ein Gedi Concert Hall in Israel in 2007, at Place des Arts, Montreal, in 2008, and was premiered in Ottawa on May 12, 2012 at the National Arts Centre.

In 2009 he released his fourth classical album, the CD / DVD “SMILE” at another sold out Place des Arts concert. The same album was launched in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre on December 6th, 2013.

Orion’s fifth classical CD, “Songs of Love and Marriage,” features his own solo compositions and six brand new original works arranged for strings. This album was launched in 2012, at his 4th (yes sold out) PDA show with the help of the “Zara String Quartet” and the “So Happy Choir.”

His 6th album “Forever Laughter” is a live album made up of Orion’s earliest compositions rearranged for strings, and this will be released with the help of “The Zara String Quartet” on May 4th, 2014.

While he continues to occasionally play with his group “Edwin & the Bedouins” (who launched their 3rd rock album “One for All” in 2011), all the songs for Brownell’s next classical album are already written, and the prospective premiere date in Montreal is sometime in the Spring of 2015.
