Hans Sturm

Past-President of the International Society of Bassists, Hans Sturm has taught and toured on six continents as a symphonic, jazz, and chamber musician. A cross section of artists with whom he has collaborated includes Stanley Jordan, Eddie Daniels, Roscoe Mitchell, Jackie Allen, Joan Wildman, Elizabeth Falconer, Mimmi Fulmer, Dane Richeson, John Moulder, Glen Velez, Marylin Crispell, Chen Ziping, Randy Brecker, Rolf Sturm and Jack Grassel, He has contributed performances and compositions to over fifty jazz and chamber music recordings including releases on Blue Note, Music & Arts, Cadence, Innova, CRI, and Red Mark. He is also an award-winning producer for his state-of-the-art pedagogical DVDs Art of the Bow with François Rabbath and Art of the Left Hand with François Rabbath that feature lecture/demonstrations, live performances, interviews, and biomechanics animations. He has served on the juries of numerous national and international solo, jazz, and composition competitions including competitions organized by the International Society of Bassists and the American String Teacher's Association. His major teachers have included Ferdinand Maresh (Philadelphia Orchestra), Anthony Bianco (Pittsburgh Symphony), Richard Davis (University of Wisconsin), Jeff Bradetich (Northwestern University), and François Rabbath. Dr. Sturm is Associate Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies and Chair of the String Area at the Glenn Korff School of Music in the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.
