Jennie Avila

Jennie Avila is a singer songwriter who has performed nationally in schools, coffeehouses, theaters, and prestigious festivals such as Appel Farm and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. A trafficker in goose bumps, Jennie brings an intense yet playful magnetism to the stage. She is known for her agile voice and melodic song writing, as well as her mastery of acoustic guitar and exotic hand percussion such as the Japanese kokirikko, which moves like a snake vertebrae. Watch out for Jennie’s wild birdcalls!

Jennie has shared the stage with many great performers including Pete Seeger, and has opened for such legendary performers as Janis Ian, and comedian, Robin Williams. She has released nine recordings that feature her original songs. You can catch Jennie performing solo, or with the duo Aca~Perco, and with the trio Hot Soup! She also presents songwriting workshops in the Mid-Atlantic region and teaches art at Hagerstown Community College.

A documentary of Jennie’s life and music is featured on Art Beat. Jennie is a Smithsonian Folkways/Fast Folk Artist, and on the board of the Discovery Station (a family oriented History and Science Museum) in Hagerstown, MD as music consultant. Her song, “The Spider and The Butterfly”, was included on the WXPN Kids Corner compilation entitled “Live and in Curlers”. She is also a featured artist in Robert Wuthnow’s book, “Creative Spirituality”.
