Jon Geffner

Jon Geffner is a confessed music nerd. In high school, he was like the kid in Almost Famous. A devout reader of Circus, Creem, and Rolling Stone, he studied musical minutiae and admired Dave Marsh, Lester Bangs, and Greil Marcus almost as much as his musical heroes Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. During his college days in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he even dabbled in rock criticism. He had also been writing songs and performing them at the campus coffeehouse. After graduation, Jon gave up rock criticism to find his own musical path. While he had been raised on the Beatles, the Stones, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, it was his later discovery of Dylan and Springsteen that fueled his desire to create music. Through them he learned that music could be more than entertainment; it could be an avenue for expression and an agent of change. They also led him to other artists such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Woody Guthrie. Jon considers his style of music to be either rock ‘n’ roll with a twang or country with a rock ‘n’ roll edge, depending on the audience, the venue, or even just his mood. Other influences include John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Guy Clark. Jon has played in various bands on Long Island since the mid-1980s and is a member of the New York Roots Music Association (NYRMA). He has also been performing in New York and Long Island venues mostly solo but also occasionally in the acoustic duo Mugz and Lamar (formerly Good Dog Nigel) with his friend Jim Mulligan. Jon has four solo CDs and two collaborations with Jim--all available through CD Baby, Spotify, and iTunes. For further information, check Jon out on Facebook ( and ReverbNation (
