Kira Braun, Soprano

Kira Braun grew up in a family full of musicians and artists, and has been a singer ever since she can remember. Her father, William (Bill) Richard Braun went to Opera School and performed many comprimario roles with the COC, and his brother Victor was a well known Canadian Baritone. Her mother, Eleanor (Smith) Braun, was with the Hamilton Philharmonic, and the Niagara Symphony, as Principal Flute. Kira feels very fortunate, to have such musical roots. Big footsteps to follow have also been laid by her talented cousins, Russell and Adi Braun. This feeds her desire to learn as much as she can and to improve more each year.

The CCOC was where it all started when Kira still remembers being part of the 1975 production of "I Pagliacci" with the Canadian Opera Company. It ignited a passion!

Kira's Choral background is steeped in Church Music, from Trinity United Church Choir (Lloyd Bradshaw, Toronto) to The Ridley Singers (Michael Tansley, St. Catharines), St Thomas Anglican Church Choir (David Marsden, St Catharines), Knox Presbyterian Church Choir (Ken Hutton, St Catharines), and most recently, 5 years in The Orpheus Choir of Toronto under the brilliant baton of Robert Cooper.

A high school vocal music class with the wonderful Theresa (Monaghan) Pothier was a terrific learning ground, with two great opportunities to lead in Musicals as Yum-Yum in the Mikado and Nellie in South Pacific.

From there Kira also participated with Garden City Productions, in "Ragtime to Riches" and "Gershwin First Person" with Tom Inglis and Ross Inglis on duelling pianos, both shows directed by the incredible Diane Nyland Proctor.

Kira has sung various Church Solos and weddings and would love to do more of this. In particular, she aspires to sing Oratorio works and to do some Lieder Recitals.

2013 found her preparing for her first operatic supporting role, as Frasquita in Toronto City Opera's February 2014 fully staged production of 'Carmen' ~ it was a dream come true!
Kira has since sung the role of Oscar with Opera by Request in Toronto, for their production of Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' in February of 2015, also appeared with Toronto Summer Opera Workshop in June of 2015, singing the role of Barbarina in Mozart's 'Le Nozze di Figaro', and worked with Opera Oshawa in their September 2015 production of "Suor Angelica" as the Nursing Sister. In an exciting advance, she appeared with Tryptych Opera and Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra in their February 2016 production of "Gianni Schicchi", where she sang the role of Nella. In other appearances, Kira has performed on two occasions as the soprano soloist for Choralis Camerata in St. Catharines, and sang her first Messiah as Soprano Soloist with Musikay, in April of 2017. She is currently studying with the wonderful Norma Burrowes.

Also in 2015, Kira was fortunate to have been selected as the Soprano artist to participate in Tafelmusik's Baroque Masterclass with Peter Harvey. This was an incredible experience, as she loves Baroque music and earlier in the year had produced her own concert with Elixir Baroque Ensemble, bringing Bach's Coffee Cantata to life with COC Chorus members Stephen Bell and Michael York.

While studying with Dr. Mary Lou Vetere in 2016, Kira was thrilled to have participated in Operavision's workshops in Busseto, Italy, the home of Verdi ~ where Masterclasses were held with Aprile Millo and where she was given the opportunity to sing for and be critiqued by Maestro Richard Bonynge.

Amidst all of this activity, Kira and Peter have continued to prepare for Recital programmes and to produce CD's, having a ton of fun in the recording studio! They began working together after rediscovering each other in Toronto ~ both grew up partly in St Catharines, where they had the same voice teacher, but attended different high schools.

Peter's beautiful piano accompaniment is a joy, as he is always sensitive to timing and so very musical in his interpretation. Thanks also to Brahm Goldhamer ~ as the Vocal Coach and Artistic Advisor on all five of these albums.

Peter Krochak is one of the founding partners of Abrams & Krochak, Canadian immigration lawyers, in practice in Toronto since March of 1996. A native of St. Catharines, he studied piano with Edward Hattey, completing his ARCT in piano performance.

While continuing his piano studies at the University of Toronto with Boris Lysenko, he performed Beethoven’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the Niagara Youth Symphony before graduating from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance.

Peter then furthered his education by completing a Bachelor of Laws degree at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.

While working as a lawyer, Peter has continued to make music with singers, instrumentalists and choirs over the years, as an accompanist, composer and singer himself. He is extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to record and perform with Kira, and is always thinking about the next material they will tackle!

Peter's musicality and talent has continued to inspire Kira, to the point where she too, has decided to finally pursue a degree in music. At age 52, Kira has begun studies at York University, where she is now pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Honours Specialization in Voice Performance.
