Larry Rand & Nicole Mendyk

Larry Rand and Nicole Mendyk bring a fun-loving Chicago sensibility to the sweet sound of California acoustic music; they call it “Deep-dish Folk.”

Larry has appeared on HBO and Comedy Central (where his song “Jacques Brel and I” was a Comedy Classic); “The Dr. Demento Show,” and numerous Chicago t.v. shows, including WTTW’s “Made in Chicago,” which won a local Emmy.

His parody “Dust Up His Nose” was a Billboard breakout, and his song “Generic Up-tempo Folksong” led off a Limeliters’ performance on the PBS special “This Land Is Your Land” hosted by Judy Collins and the Smothers Brothers. The song became part of “The Folk Years,” a companion CD available on Rhino Records -- wicked irony, since Larry’s song made fun of the music featured on the show! In addition to the Limeliters, his songs have been performed by Steve Goodman, Jim Post and others, including the Sweet Adelines.

Larry's longest-running media affiliation has been with WFMT’s “The Midnight Special” radio show, started by film director Mike Nichols more than 50 years ago and hosted by Rich Warren. It began broadcasting Larry’s satirical and comedy songs in 1973 and continues to feature his work.

Nicole Mendyk’s songs also have been featured on “The Midnight Special.” She is a veteran of the coffeehouse and club circuit in Chicago and has performed with Larry at California clubs and festivals. A professional educator when not performing, Nicole sings beautifully, plays guitar and mountain dulcimer and has written half the songs on “Deep-dish Folk.”

Larry and Nicole live near Palm Springs, California, and enjoy hiking and bicycling the nearby desert and mountains.
