Maria Cangiano

I am a singer, songwriter and composer from Argentina who loves to create global musical genres with Latin American roots crossed with Jazz and Classical music. My musical journey is a mirror of my gipsy life: Born in Bs As from Italian family grew up listening to Classical and Latin Folk music thanks to my father and Tango, thanks to my mother. Went to do my PhD in history to the US where I discovered Jazz, blues and afro music. Inspired by my Napolitan grandfather who was an Opera singer, I left the University world to do my dream: to become a singer. Premiered as an Opera singer, doing mezzo soprano roles in many well known NY companies, such as Me estrené como cantante lírica interpretando muchos roles de Regina Opera, Dicapo Opera and Amato Opera. Then suddenly tango came back to my life. I became known as the Edith Piaf of Tango by the public while performing in many well known NY venues such as Blue Note, Joe's Pub, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Cornelia Street Cafe, Tischman Auditorium, Argentine Consulate, DROM, Tutuma Social Club with master musicians, icons of the Tango-Jazz scene from NY, pianist-composer, Latin grammy award winner, Fernado Otero, virtuous pianist-composer Octavio Brunetti, the bass players and composers Pedro Giraudo y Martin Balik, percussionists Quintino Cinalli y Mauro Satalino, the Spanish composer accordeonist Victor Prieto, composers and guitar players Julio Santillán y Beledo and the famous bandoneonists Raúl Jaurena, Tito Castro y Juan Pablo Jofré Romarión. In 2009-10 my first CD dedicated to the Piazzolla repertory came out at the Blue Notes of NY and Milan: Ballads for my Life and Death. In 2015 this tribute was premiered in Bs As at the prestigious Catalan theater Margarita Xirgu .
Creativity continued expanding. It has no limits..My own songs came to life in Corazon de Mujer-Heart of a Woman in 2011, a CD with original songs of mine and Latin American women poets with arrangements by two of the most incredible Argentine musicians : Quique Sinesi (guitar) y Quintino Cinalli (percussion). It was premiered at the Joes Pub in NY in 2012, and later on presented at the Blue Note and other Bs As venues in 2013-2014.
In 2015 I reencounter myself with Piazzolla music in Bs As after meeting Miguel Pereiro, a talented young composer and pianist. In collaboration presented PIantados, a show with a free exploration of Piazzolla classic and new songs in serveral Bs As venues, Pista Urbana, 36 Billares and La Confitería Ideal.
From this experience Renaceré (Reborn) my third CD came to life: a compilation of known, forgotten and classical songs of Piazzolla with incredible guests musicians such as violinist Fabin Bertero, saxofonist Bernardo Monk, guitarrist Quique Sinesi, bass players Nicolas Zacarías and Roberto Amerise, flautist Julián Vat and percusionists Quintino Cinalli y Daniel Pipi Piazzolla (Piazzolla's grandson!). In Renaceré , Piazzolla `s songs are also reborn. Piazzolla made tango global and now we have a new Piazzolla song repertory renewed by global musical genres.
