Welcome to my CD Baby artist page!

I’ve been playing, performing, and teaching Irish music since the 70’s. In the late 60’s I took piano and piano accordion lessons, but I didn’t take well to keys. I started seriously playing guitar in the early 70’s, playing Irish and American folk music, blues, and bluegrass. After a couple of years I took up the 5-string banjo, playing a long-neck open-back banjo like Tommy Makem and Pete Seeger. After another year or two I got my first fiddle, and within a few months I was playing at céilí and sessions in Philadelphia. My Irish band Celtic Crossroad formed in ’78, and is still playing today (check out our CD “Cunla” on CDBaby). I started playing for dance competitions after I got my daughter involved in dancing. I also perform with my other bands Mountain Laurel (bluegrass), Beats Walkin’ (Western Swing), and Vintage Country (classic country with my wife, where I also play all the instruments). I teach fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin.

The Irish dance music I’ve recorded is especially for competitive step dancers. It’s the only feis (dance competition) music available in the style of the traditional bands I learned from: The Chieftains, De Danann, Bothy Band, Planxty, Altan and the like. I created all the arrangements, played all the instruments, and did all of the recording/mixing/mastering at home. Besides being at the required dance tempos, the music is played on a strong downbeat, which perfectly matches Irish dance steps, particularly the hard shoe dancing. Minimum syncopation allows for syncopation in the steps without rhythmic competition from the music. The arrangements are varied and dynamic making it as good for listening as for dancing. The most common comment I receive from dancers, parents, and teachers is that they can listen to the music over and over without getting tired of it!

All of the tunes on my CDs are available at any speed on my site www.markarringtonmusic.com.
