It began when my cousin played piano for me on summer vacation. I longed to play, and was lucky to have lessons, and Chopin and Schubert. I loved the blues, Ray Charles, and made a blackberry pie to bring to his concert, which his band happily ate. Singing was an outlet so much at the center of me, and at 17 I sang at my first open mike at Coffee Catz in Sebastopol, CA. And so it began. Finding the Nord lead, and all the sounds and textures it could make, opened worlds of imagination, and I began to record layers of sounds and write songs with delight. Tad Wagner agreed to work with me, and his skills and ears and heart, and hours in a little warehouse studio led to the first Petracovich albums, and playing shows, touring in a van with my husband, adventure, trust, stress, mystery. I wanted a family, and began one, and recorded my 3rd album pregnant with my first baby, with the help of John Askew in Portland, a nest of creativity and patience and fun. Becoming a parent was beautiful and tragic at once, as my baby died a week after he was born. Heartbroken, I sang, literally, in a new world, I sang to my baby and found a deeper part of my soul. A new album for him is on its way, and now I sing to my two girls every night, and my heart is full, and still looking for adventure in new sounds and songs, still weeping, still in awe of this big life. in this middle of all this, I had cancer, and again was taken down to the depths. Where I am starting to lift my head from in quiet hope and openness for more music.
