Poppa John "Bug" & The Jam Band

Poppa John "Bug" has played Electric Bass professionally since summer 1973 when he interviewed with Richie Havens at the Electric Lady Studios in New York. Richie had just introduced a new Gospel Rock group called Fresh Flavor on The Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson and wanted to add a rhythm element and there was Bug, in the right place at the right time. While on tour with Flavor, he met the Godfather of British Blues, legendary Alexis Korner. Alexis became Poppa's mentor and their friendship blossomed into a partnership that lasted for many years. He honored Alexis' friendship by naming his first-born Jeremy Alexis as a tribute to their bond. After finishing his time with Flavor, Poppa John studied with commercial session musician Ed Lord for many years, soon after becoming a session bassist. After joining Radio Registry, Poppa met many of NY's fine musicians, including Eric Oxendine, Murray Weinstock of Manhattan Transfer, Rob Gerstein who played with Carly Simon and world famous drummer Bernard Purdie of Aretha Franklin fame. John also worked with George Caldwell of CBS London. Hanging out in the Village John got inspired by jamming in many of the village's fine clubs including, The Bitter End, The Dugout, Folk City and the world famous Cafe Wha. Poppa also hung out at jazz great John Lewis' club that also inspired John to pursue a professional outlook on his career. Poppa John Bug headlined in the 80's with James Booty Neal and started a group called B&B's. He added songwriting to his talents, performed the first pioneering shows on Manhattan Cable on the Ben the DJ show and The Allen Chan comedy hour. John left B&B and performed a solo act playing the village circuit and the Upper East Side for many years. Poppa John left the music scene and became a student, working towards a business degree and becoming a sales manager in the Consumer Electronic field for over 25 years. Eleven years ago John decided to change his direction and go back to his roots, playing music, writing songs and just living again. Poppa teamed up with his New Jersey friends and they are currently working in the Studio and Showcase circuit. Poppa is the brother-in-law of Alternative Rocker Perry Farrel with his son's Jeremiah Alexis aka: The Urban Legend aka: Jeremiah Alexis & Cody B Ware are all in the entertainment business. Poppa got his guitar strumming influence from the one and only rhythm master Richie Havens
