raintribe is the brain child of producer Michael Koppelman. It was formed in the early 1990's while Koppelman was a producer/engineer at Prince's Paisley Park recording studio and included musicians Steve Mayone, Steve Noonan, Kurt Koppelman and Andy Deckard. The band mates met while at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and eventually moved to Minneapolis. The band ceased to be a band around 2000 but Koppelman continues to make records under the raintribe name.

Michael Koppelman worked extensively with the artist Prince, recording and mixing most of the Diamonds and Pearls and Symbol records. He also played bass on the Prince song Blue Light and wrote, performed and produced a record with Prince protégé Ingrid Chavez. He recently did a remix of Chavez's "Down By The Water" single from her recent record "A Flutter and Some Words". Koppelman also produced, recorded and/or mixed records with Frente, Booker T and the MG's, E, Basehead and Moxy Früvous and he is currently writing and performing with the Minneapolis band Tea and Sympathy.
