Although I always sang, I only came to traditional singing in my early twenties, and went on to compete in several Fleadhanna, with a certain degree of success. I became fascinated by the tunes of the songs initially, and the potential to interpret them, to ornament, emphasise, inflect, and generally mould the song to suit my voice and how it influenced me and appealed to me. Traditional music would lose most of its appeal if it were played without interpretation, and the stamp of the individual artist playing it. Why then would traditional singing be any different? Paddy Tunney, that great "Man of Songs", and one of my primary influences remarked that "we must never forget the fact that the greatest instrument in the world is the human voice".

My parents, now sadly deceased, were both singers, as were other members of their families. My brothers and sisters are also singers. It is a great joy and privilege to be able to sing, to lose myself in the story of a great song, with a beautiful and challenging air, always with the hope that it is also a joy for the listener too.
