Robert 'One-Man' Johnson

Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson

Folk-blues singer and international educator Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson sings original and classic songs self-accompanied using various guitars, harmonica, high hat cymbal, and a home-made pedal-operated 12 string bass instrument called a ‘foot piano’. During his 52-year career, Johnson has appeared 5 times on A Prairie Home Companion, made 13 recordings, and performed his music around the world while living in Turkey, Japan, Saudi Arabia, China, and Thailand as well as the United States.

At age 16, during his youth in Rhinelander Wisconsin, Robert formed a rock group called The Debonaires. His early interests in Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Johnny Cash shifted to a fascination with the roots blues music of Big Boy Crudup, Lightnin’Hopkins, Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. In 1966 while operating a coffee house/music venue in Eau Claire Wisconsin, ‘One-Man’ hosted Jesse Fuller, legendary author of ‘The San Francisco Bay Blues’. Struck by Jesse’s unique instrumentation, Johnson went on to adopt a similar musical presentation. Robert 'one-Man' Johnson sings and plays a two-beat, ragtime-laced mixture of often humorous observations of the human condition colored by his Midwest raising and his career as an international educator and traveling entertainer.
