Samba New York!

Samba New York! is a world-renowned samba performance company dedicated to entertaining, educating, and uplifting people of all backgrounds with the exhilarating music and dance of Brazil.

The company's Founder, Director, and principal percussionist is Philip Galinsky, Ph.D. (aka "Dr. Samba"), a leading educator and performer of samba percussion in the US, and one of the foremost ethnomusicologists specializing in Brazilian music. The group's Managing Director is Valerie Galinsky and its Choreographer is Danielle Lima, who grew up in Rio de Janeiro's famous Beija Flor Samba School, later becoming one of the top samba dance specialists in the US.

Samba New York's “Show Group" has performed for some of the world’s most prestigious companies, venues, and mass media, including such events as ESPN’s 2014 Upfront at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway; Google’s 2017 YouTube Brandcast event featuring Katie Perry; Peter Gabriel’s 2013 WITNESS Gala; the 2017 New York Salsa Festival at Brooklyn's Barclays Center for over 25,000 fans; and performances for such other clients as NIKE, Pepsi Co, Bloomberg, Macy’s, Starbucks, SC Johnson, Kraft, MAC, HSBC, Ogilvy & Mather, the Secretaries of Culture of the States of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Amazonas, The Today Show, CBS Early Show, Good Day New York, Dr. Oz Show, and Brazil's foremost nightly news program — TV Globo’s Jornal Nacional.

This series of recordings explores various different modalities of samba — ranging from the "samba de roda" and "samba reggae" from Bahia, to Rio-de-Janeiro-stye "batucada" and "samba-enredo," to a hybrid "samba-zouk" rhythm fusing Brazilian and Martinican musical elements. Songs include lyrics sung in Portuguese, English, and French.

Philip Galinsky composed, produced, and arranged all of the tracks, performing all of the lead vocal and percussion parts. The late Dionísio Santos performed all of the guitar and cavaquinho parts, with background vocals by Kerry Linder, Francesca Voza, and Dionísio Santos. Jean Cabrera recorded and mixed all of the tracks.
