Steve Cohen

Steve Cohen & Jim Liban

Leroy Airmaster was the dominant blues band in the greater Milwaukee area from about 1978-1991.Steve Cohen(harp),Bill Stone(guitar) and Vodie Rhinehart(drums) were steady members, with Dave Kasik moving in and out of the bass chair.Re-fromed in 2009,the current incarnation features Steve,Bill and Vodie, with bassist Kurt Koenig.Kurt's performance history included stints with The Complainers,Billy Flynn, the RoCos and others.
In the early 1990's,Steve left Milwaukee to perform in a show in Lake Tahoe NV,and later Reno,NV.Upon his return in 1993,he re-invented himself as a duo performer and played a busy circuit of clubs and restaurants with numerous partners including Peter Roller,Jim Liban, Billy Flynn,Greg Koch,Steve Arvey,Eric Noden,Jon Paris,Sam McCue ,Dave Weld,Paul Black and several others. These unions resulted in 2 acoustic style duo CDs : Hot Air (with Jim Liban),and : Duo Personality,(with Peter Roller and Paul Black.)Cohen also formed a band called the RoCos(short for The Rolling Cohens)with Roller, drummer Bob Mueller, and bassist Kurt Koenig.By the late 1990's,Mr.Roller had dropped out and was replaced by stellar guitarist Greg Koch. This resulted in the band CD :Mixed Feelings, which featured this quartet augmented by keyboardists Susan Julian and Joel Freisinger. Also appearing in cameos were Jim Liban, conga player John Ricco, and Gospel quartet the Masonic Wonders.
Along the way,Cohen alligned with Joel Freisinger and John Ricco to form the Riccos,a trio (occasionally augmented by drummer Tom Sorce Jr.)that continues to perform jazz and blues standards in a variety of venues in S.E.Wisconsin.
Leroy Airmaster performed opening sets for Siegel-Schwall and the Radiators at Milwaukee's Turner Hall Ballroom in October 2009 and March 2010.Steve Hamilton of Makin Sausage Music recorded these 2 sets on a portable 4 track machine with 2 ambient mics. The result is the recently released live CD-Leroy Airmaster-Live At Turner Hall.
Mr.Cohen competed at the 2009 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. This 27 year old event is sanctioned by the Blues Foundation.Out of 82 solo/duo acts,Cohen was selected to be 1 of 8 finalists, despite his having no experience as a solo artist.Though he was not the winner, making it to the finals was validation of musical excellence.Leroy Airmaster and Steve Cohen's musical activities can be followed at
