The Big Thank You

Music is a self-confirming act. No matter what one’s preference, its validity is realized in each player and listener alike whenever it is performed well. Categories and classifications aside, good music has the potential to both liberate and strengthen one’s creative self in a way that allows for an entire universe of exploration. Such is the goal of Jesse Fox and Shaun Watkins, co-founders of The Big Thank You. Combining the fervent DIY spirit of old punk rock with an affinity for experimental processes, TBTY create a genre-hopping survey of strange yet inviting audio oddities. Using little more than vintage video game consoles, circuit bent toys, some guitar and a few keyboards this San Diego based act navigates a vast musical space with rather sparse instrumentation. Their sound is eclectic and philosophy simple: to have fun playing music that begins with some random chaotic element and expands into a self-defining structure around that element. “We bounce ideas back and forth while playing a new tune the first few times, but we try to stick to what the song seems to want to do based on that initial fragment. An NES game soundtrack may jump to some bizarre rarely used key or time signature when we crash the sound map using code-bending techniques. So, we sample the crash and play to it in that key to that count. A lot of what we do is synthesizer or sample-based, but in a way that breaks recorded sound down to musical molecules and re-appropriates those pieces to form something new yet vaguely familiar."
