The Common Cup Company

Formed in Winnipeg in the early 1980s, four of us - Jim Uhrich, Ian Macdonald, Bob Wallace and Gordon Light - were clergy in neighbouring parishes. In the passing of years, we have been scattered across the land, and we have both added and lost members. Gordon (Kamloops, BC) and Bob (Coaldale, Alberta) continue with the group. We were deeply saddened by the death of Jim, our pianist, in 2009 and then Ian in the spring of 2016. Drummer Scott McDonald from Sherwood Park, AB and bassist Richard Betts from Calgary, AB joined us in the 1990s giving energy and new life to our aging bones! And Lloyd MacLean from Pictou County, NS, joined us pianist in 2009, making us truly national! Although most of us are now retired from our day-jobs, distance still makes rehearsal time a rare and wondrous thing. But we love getting together!

Common Cup originally produced five cassette tapes of original music, however now have 6 CDs, including two collections of "Common Cup Live" songs from concerts over the years. Our most recent studio CD, Earth Beneath Your Feet, was released in 2018.

Some of our music appears in the more recent Canadian Hymn Books: Voices United (United Church of Canada), Common Praise (Anglican), The Book of Praise (Presbyterian) and More Voices (United Church). Some songs are also published in collections in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway and elsewhere. She Flies On! Has been translated into many languages including French, Spanish, German and Swedish.

Our mission as a group is one of teaching, song-writing, singing and supporting congregations and groups in their ministry. We have given leadership in parish missions, and in denominational conference centres. As well, we have shared in national events from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland to the Yukon. In the Spring of 2018, we were blessed to do a 6 concert tour in churches in south west Australia. We care about personal faith, our common life in the Church, the well-being of the earth and its creatures, and peace and justice work.

Sheet music for many songs can be found on our website,
