Yellow No. 5

A Little History...
Don't be fooled by Yellow No. 5's 2004 Midwest Entertainment Music Association nomination for Best Country Band. Most who follow the band don't think of Yellow No. 5 as a "country" band. Yellow No. 5 is a band from the Midwest who doesn't try to hide it. Yellow No. 5 takes from the likes of Wilco, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Johnny Cash, and The Old 97's, adds a touch of bluegrass, and the stories of life in the Heartland to create its sound and songs.

Based just outside of Kansas City, Yellow No. 5 spends a great deal of its time producing and recording songs in their home studio. YN5 will venture out for shows that mean something, but will you find them playing 3 nights a week, not likely. But when you do find them, you'll find a band with energy, a purpose, and a solid roots-based following. You might also catch them on the Kansas City radio station, 90.1 FM KKFI, or one of many internet radio stations. Their songs can be bought online at and iTunes, and sales of the CD include not only fans from their base areas in the Midwest, but also fans from Japan, Spain, and England. Reviews of "Mud Road Superstars" can also be found in past issues of the Alt. Country 'zine's "Leicester Bangs", and "Luke" (both based in the UK).

Yellow No. 5 started out as a side project between David and Chad. Jim Kesterson joined playing guitar and mandolin, Chris Rob added keys. For Amusement '98, Ted sat in on drums with Larry adding a few guitar parts. Chris and Jim took off after Mud Road Superstars, Matt and Larry joined. Brett left after Six and Fifteen. Mark Fail jumped in and recorded "No Combination" and "Sycamore Tree". Brett returned and is back in the swing of things. That's it, the short and sweet of it.

Yellow No. 5 is...
Chad Nichol, Brett McCoy, David Stropes, Jamie McCannon, Matthew Stropes, Larry Peery.
