ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
REVIVAL was written by Kristen Plylar-Moore, and performed by Lea Kalisch, Julia Ostrov, Samantha Gillogly, Ugene Romashov, Lucy Warrington, and Anna Wray.

Kristen wrote the music in REVIVAL to counter messages of intolerance and fear with a call for love and justice.

Raised Catholic in San Antonio, TX, she began playing guitar in her church choir when she was ten years old. She loved the music. It was uplifting and deeply grounding in the themes of faith and hope. Since childhood, Kristen also understood social justice action as an expression of faith, following her parents to nuclear disarmament demonstrations in the 80's and protests against the first Gulf War in the 90's. And the role music played in these efforts left an impression.

Kristen’s personal journey led her to Judaism and her spiritual home is a progressive synagogue in New York City, where she and her wife, singer/co-producer Julia Ostrov, have been members for many years. What has stayed with Kristen, and what continues to deepen, is her understanding of sacred music as a source for replenishment and revitalization.

REVIVAL is rooted largely in Hebrew biblical texts, including passages from B’reishit (Genesis), D’varim (Deuteronomy), Rut (Ruth), and Y’sha’yahu (Isaiah). Songs also draw from Christian scriptures that echo Jewish values (passages from Matthew and Corinthians) as well as from secular understandings of love and justice. After first sharing REVIVAL in December 2016 at Wow Café Theater, the show has been performed in progressive spiritual spaces around New York City.

The work to repair the world – tikkun olam – is hard, despairing even, but music can offer resilience and hope. Music can speak to the struggles of our times and remind us that we can still create a world that honors the earth, welcomes the stranger, and celebrates the divine in each of us. This is what REVIVAL seeks to do.

Audience response to the live show:
“I LOVED your show!!! It was amazing. I woke up this morning wanting to hear the songs again and wishing I could listen to the revival album on loop. The beauty of the music, the spirit it expressed, the world it creates and who you are as people went straight to my heart! Whatever tent you put up – I’m there!!” Larcy Cooper

“My body-level experience of listening was one of sacred warriorship -- my heart kept opening -- and the music, lyrics, instruments, and voices gave it a place to open to more. Congratulations! Thank you!” Lisa Freedman

“I certainly felt uplifted, healed, soothed and inspired by the beautiful words and music. It was such a powerful evening. I was enthralled.” Joy Sanjek

“An anecdote to cynicism.” Tori Napier
