Album Notes
3 Hand Stephen is performing, recording, and visual artist Stephen Cohen, who uses voice, acoustic guitar, cigar box guitars, a one of a kind miniature guitar, and a homemade 1 String Thing instrument in his performances and workshops. His first album, The Tree People, recorded by his band of the same name at a studio in the woods near Eugene Oregon, and originally released locally in vinyl in 1979, was discovered by worldwide by record collectors in this century and reissued, to international critical acclaim, by record companies in Japan and Spain. Stephen has performed in concert and at festivals all over the United States and in Belgium and Spain. Stephen released a children’s album, Here Comes the Band, in 2006, and has done interactive children’s performances and workshops at museums, libraries and schools across the United States. Stephen released 3 String Stephen Plays Cigar Box Guitar in 2014, leading to performances at cigar box guitar festivals in Pennsylvania and Alabama. Stephen created a 5-foot musical sculpture, The String King, as a Salem (Oregon) Art Association Artist in Residence, displaying and demonstrating it at the 2017 Salem Art Fair. Stephen was a 2017 Music OMI Fellow at Art OMI in Ghent, New York, collaborating with 11 musicians from all over the globe. Stephen was a 2017 Resident Artist at the deFENIKS Art Center in Mortsel, Belgium, making a guitar using a Belgium beer-can, presenting a cigar box guitar workshop and performing in concert at the Walpurgis Musiektheater. Stephen was an official showcase performer at the 2018 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. His new vinyl album, Where Do We Go? will be released in the fall of 2018. Stephen was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He currently lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
