through the windshield

by 7k

7k's infectious, unusual alternative rock "runs the gamut from mid-90's alternative balladry to full-blown arena-sized assaults." Think infectious, substantial pop songs performed with rock ferocity.

Album Notes
7k's infectious, unusual alternative rock "runs the gamut from mid-90's alternative balladry to full-blown arena-sized assaults."* The foursome have rocked audiences from L.A. to San Diego to Las Vegas with adrenalized performances of their catchy, substantial rock songs. Their first single, bombsong, got airplay in several markets, from KCRW in L.A. to KOMP in Las Vegas. Now, with two EP's under their belt [produced by Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket], 7k has laid claim to a strong sonic identity is proud to release through the windshield, their debut full-length album.

Frontman Jeff Garvin founded the band with his high-school musical partner-in crime, bassist Carlos Rivera Jr., in 2001, in the heart of the now-famous O.C. 7k grew its roots in the music scene that gave birth to alternative greats like the Offspring and No Doubt, but it was in nearby Los Angeles that the budding rock group found their secret weapon in lead guitarist David Neil Black. Powered by Black's ferocious lead, Rivera's melodic bass work, and Garvin's powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence, 7k quickly ground their own niche in the LA Music scene. Former Toad the Wet Sprocket bassist Dean Dinning discovered the band and produced their debut and sophomore EP's.

With some live TV experience and regional airplay under their belts, the foursome locked themselves in their Anaheim studio to write and self-produce their debut full-length album. In early 2005, with the record near completion, 7k added O.C. rock drummer Corey Manske to the roster. His tasteful grooves and crisp power put a fine point on the 7k sound.

With the release of their debut album, through the windshield, the boys have emerged from the studio and are part of a dynamic new rock scene in Los Angeles.

A fresh view of new rock...
Through the Windshield is a real breath of fresh air. Good solid rock with pop sensability. 7k establish a sound and style that has classic motive with contemporary appeal. If you like rock and thirst for something fresh and new, this is really worth it! Very well written and arranged songs with great lyrics, hooks and choruses. Keep up the good work, fellas!

like it a lot
Disclaimer - I know 2 guys in the band, but I'm an old guy and they wouldn't have expected me to buy it. I like Through the Windshield a lot. I already had 7k's prior EP, and had downloaded several other tunes. Jeff's singing gets better and better. The band is tight, the lyrics witty and interesting, the hooks play in my head at random moments through the day. I have odd and eclectic tastes (Papa Wemba, Comedian Harmonists), but still love rock 'n roll. I'm so happy 7k is so good.

Rock out...and then kill Jim Vickers...
Ever since I had the good sense to pick up a copy of 7k's "Through The Windshield" right here on CDBaby.com, I've had it constantly looping everywhere I go. It has become the soundtrack to every waking moment in my life. Sometimes, when it's dark and I'm alone, I just put "Who Dies First" on 'repeat'. Then I start to get ideas. Strange ideas I've never thought of before. "10 in the magazine and 1 in the pipe...11 lives are changing overnight..." Hmmmm...gotta go do something now.

Incredible & eclectic rock that defies easy categories.
Somehow, they did it. 7k created a CD that catches the quirky energy of their live shows; somehow they ran through the 80's and 90's and pulled out the best of bands from Nine Inch Nails to The Violent Femmes, with a few nods to Oingo-Boingo, Live, and Drama Rama along the way. This CD is alternately nostlagic and contemptuous, often of the same thing and at the same time. If you can listen to "The Wrong Girl" without humming it, or to "Bomb Song" without feeling creeped out, I'm pretty sure you're an alien. (Probably, though, not of the Suburban variety.)
