The Cimarron Banks

by Amy Annelle

Like the High Plains setting that inspired it, Annelle's seventh album (and third on the High Plains Sigh label) is alive with allegory, steeped in ancient struggles and the destructive and transformative power of the elements.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Amy Annelle is a modern-day songwriter whose work balances imagination with a reverence for America's restless, divergent musical past. This unusual artist has been recording and touring for over a decade, crafting "richly textured, exotic song-worlds that bear little resemblance to standard voice-and-guitar folk songs" (Billboard). Through many seasons, across many miles, Annelle's path has focused an elusive "American" vision and a musical identity that is equally furtive and forthright. Her body of work (three albums under her own name and four with the retired 'Places' moniker) has garnered critical praise and a modest following stateside and beyond.

Her seventh album, "The Cimarron Banks", is an Elemental love story composed and staged in "No-Man's Land", a real but little-known region of the American High Plains. Like the setting that inspired it, "The Cimarron Banks" is alive with allegory, steeped in ancient struggles and the destructive and transformative power of the elements.

Over time, Annelle's voice has matured with a luminous, rare beauty. Her voice serves as a steady beacon on "The Cimarron Banks", guiding the listener along a path that is stormy, but ultimately ethereal. In addition to producer Craig Ross' accompaniment, the album features very special guest Ian McLagan (Small Faces, Bob Dylan) and longtime musical ally Paul Brainard (Victoria Williams, Richmond Fontaine), as well as new friends from the Austin, Texas music community.

The album was recorded and mixed in Austin and will be released June 1, 2010 on the High Plains Sigh label. The paintings & illustrations of Austin artist Valerie Fowler grace the album's triple-gatefold sleeve, which was designed by Annelle and also features her High Plains photography. Additional recording was done by Brian Beattie; veteran engineer Joe Gastwirt provided analog mastering.

In addition to her own work, Annelle has sung with independent music legends Michael Hurley, Jandek and R. Stevie Moore, and indie band Okkervil River; she has been billed with notable modern folk artists Roy Harper, Jolie Holland and Bill Callahan. She also performs with Ralph White in their early country duo Precious Blood. She will be touring in support of the new album.
