ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'My Lover's Ghost' is comprised of six songs. Songs which were written around the same time as I was writing for a full-length album I want to release next year (2010). I call them the 'salvaged deluge' that didn't make the cut because of their 'folkier' origins, and so decided to turn them into an EP because I couldn't bring myself not to do anything with them. It started in my bedroom, then moved into my flatmates wardrobe, then into my own, then onto 'Cat Farm Studio' owned by Josh Grange, who helped build upon the raw recordings I had, turning the EP into something really beautiful. His choice of instruments for each song were varied and thoughtful, pedal steel guitar in the title track, piano accordion on 'Something', banjo on 'Free' and so on. Mixed & mastered by Aussie engineers Jared Scott & Mitch Kenny in LA and John Ruberto in Melbourne, the EP marks the second independent release on my own label, OfOneMusic and heralds a turning point in the frequency of my releases in the future. The artwork, graphic design and website are all designed by me and I do this not because I'm a control freak, but because I taught myself how to, and I know how I want things to look, so in the truest sense, I really am an independent artist, and your contribution helps grow my environment, making it possible to further create and inspire creativity in others.

Haunted & Beautiful
A precursor to her forthcoming 3rd full length album, this EP contains so much unfathomable beauty in its 6 songs that it feels like an album. From the haunted & yearning opening track "Second Best" to the dewy-eyed hope drenched closing number "Shine," it's a uniquely brilliant & cohesive song cycle that, to me, speaks of an overwhelming loss and one's journey through coping, rediscovering, and learning to live again. I can't write a review for a Carla Werner release without explicitly stating how impeccable her voice is. The deft way she maneuvers around the melodies & flirts with the lyrics is superhuman. There are many stripped down, quiet moments on this recording which is when I feel her vocals reach their true magic. The arrangements here are remarkable as well! Sparse & atmospheric, the guitar work is nearly as stunning as her voice, especially on the understated "You Can Follow Me." "Free" closely resembles some strange & beautiful breed of psychedelic bluegrass. I've never heard anything quite like it. To sum up my thoughts on Carla's "My Lover's Ghost" EP, it is a brilliant, haunted, and beautiful piece of music. I have waited for such a long time to hear it & I am unequivocally in love with it.
