ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Thirty-one artists contributed trax (most over the internet) from thirteen home studios in Denmark, Arkansas, Washington and California. My voice and guitar are central, but you’ll hear so much more: Uilleann pipes, bodhran, fiddles, mandolin, melodica, upright bass and electric bass, flute, banjo, cello, electric guitars, drums, bouzouki, marimba, a choir...there’s a lot going on.

It took awhile to get here. Actual recording began in summer 2005 but, as mentioned in the liner notes, this album began with 9/11/2001. As that day’s news went from very bad to very, very bad, I ran the same gamut of emotions that many others did – mind numb with disbelief, panic, rage, grief, depression, stoic resignation. After hours of this I found myself making a very childish doodle on a napkin of a swirl, then I drew a stick on it… a whirly pop. I wished I could use that whirly pop like a magic wand to change things.

“PopZinkle” is my journey from joy’s eclipse through dark, painful places, towards hope. The title track is an overture that contains all the themes that follow, and yes, the album is meant to be listened to straight through in one sitting. At 48 minutes, that might be a lot to ask these days, but give it a try.

Buy this CD!
David Zink has a great voice full of expression. Pop Zinkle reminds me sometimes of a "folky Frank Zappa". Unique songs and beautiful arrangemenets. My favorit songs are Wings of Love and Rain or Shine. I highly recommend this CD!

Beautiful/Unique
This is one hell of a CD.
I'm enjoying Feel A Train and there is something special about Dance With A Shadow. That phrasing is amazing (yes, I just did that on purpose).
"Bird" sounds like something Lightfoot wanted to do but only Zink could capture it.

Spectacular CD!
Once in a blue moon I hear a new CD that just sweeps me off my feet and PopZinkle did just that. I really can't pick a favorite song because they are all favorites. From the opening song, David takes you on a journey of wild textures and images that conjure up incredible beauty and it never lets up. This is first class and innovative songwriting, performance, and production. Everyone should give this jewel of a CD a listen.

degrees of separation
In a world that seems likely to sink under the weight of it's human population and all it's attendant madness, it's heartening to be nourished by the hope and lightness of this CD. We need a 24 hour news cycle that inspires us the way David's songs do. The fact that it sounds awesome too is just the perfect presentation to a wonderfully healthy meal. Bravo!

A fantastic album
This is a fantastic CD that grows each time you listen to it. David Zink is a teriffic story-teller, weaving together the great genres of folk, country, blues, and pop. My own personal favorite on the album is Mary. While not explicitly saying so in the lyrics, I read this to be an homage to America. And an honest homage at that, recognizing the several significant faults in his country. Other favorites include Dance With a Shadow, Rain of Shine, and Dancing on my Grave. Just a great musical journey.

An Inspiring Album!
I've been listening to David Zink's music for 20 years, both live in concert and on CD, and I've never been disappointed. He's a real artist, that expresses from the soul and is not afraid to try new things. There's so much variety on this CD, each song has it's own unique expression. Most artist's CDs sound all the same, after two songs, you've heard it all but not with Popzinkle. There's a song for your every mood. Some of my faves are Dancing on my Grave, Bye Bye Magpie, and Wings of Love. Dance With a Shadow and Rain or Shine are truly catchy. This is a Dream is really haunting. Feel a Train makes me want to go out and change the world and Bird reminds me that I too can soar! Popzinkle and David Zink belong in every music lover's collection.

Masterful & Compelling
What a joyful listening experience! David Zink’s latest album, PopZinkle, is gritty and magical, and combines philosophical depth with exuberant playfulness. The tracks are whimsically peppered with just the right dose of politics, and buoyed up with love and tenderness. The 31 guest musicians shine throughout and provide a fantastic foundation for Zink’s soulful voice & guitar. Highlights for me include “This is a Dream, “Bye-Bye Magpie” and “Dance with a Shadow,” among many others. Taken together, the album is a beautiful patchwork of musical styles and traditions, from the Irish, mandolin-infused jigginess of “Dancing on my Grave,” to the retro, bluesy quality of “Dance with a Shadow,” which reminds me of some of Bob Dylan’s latest works. I’m glad to know I have PopZinkle to tide me over while I wait for the next batch of goodies from Zink’s musical quiver. Bravo and well done!

A treasure of an album!
First off, this is a beautiful sounding album. It's full of depth, definition, and sonic imagery. The instrumentation and arrangements are both song-specific, and song-appropriate, and that's something I personally find deeply satisfying. From a recording/production standpoint alone this is a wonderful album.
...And then there's the content. The emotional/spiritual arc that this album describes is literally unlike anything I've ever heard. At times I felt like laughing and crying simultaneously. There is a theme of simple hope balanced precariously in the face of daunting adversity that runs through the entire record which left me spent, reassured, thoughtful, and wondering "How on Earth did you DO that??" If depth and artistry move you, I strongly recommend this album.

Popzinkle by David Zink
I love this cd, I listen to it every time I am driving in my car. It is difficult for me to describe because I find it rather eclectic but it lifts my spirits and gives me a warm feeling. I think the artist, David Zink, should be very famous if he isn't already!

Well crafted album, wonderful sounds that keep every listener engaged. Some of my personal favorite tracks are "PopZinkle", "Thorn Man", "This is a Dream," and "Bye, Bye, Magpie." The songs are masterfully written, the stories relevant and passionate. You'll note the CD was mastered at the world famous Bernie Grundman studio! Surely a must own for any music-lover's collection.
