Album Notes
Mr. Maps are a 5-piece instrumental rock band from Brisbane, Australia. They began in 2007 as a dynamic live ensemble, featuring the beautifully crafted, image conjuring compositions of Chris Perren. They have earned a reputation for transcendental live performances featuring complex layers of bass, drums and guitar, lifted by lush piano & cello, and punctuated by electronic glitches and tones. Mr. Maps compositions are experimental and meticulous, with an air of optimism and beauty. Reviews have been littered with such words as "inspired", "energetic" and "breathtaking" and sonic comparisons have been made with bands such as Battles, Tortoise, toe, and 65daysofstatic.

Mr. Maps will release their debut album Wire Empire in September 2010, but in the meantime they have prepared a tasty entrée to the album in the form of the double A-side single, Nice Fights. You get two uplifting and complex instrumental tracks: Nice Fights and Fly, You Monumental Mistake. Some will always disagree, but we think that these tracks are nothing like anything that you have heard before. But you will, of course, have to decide this for yourself.

Nice Fights is a giddy rush of mathematical manouvres and angular grooves. Jagged melodic themes fall away into the occasional reflective moment, only to jet back into the foreground accompanied by frantic drumming and bombastic unison lines.

Fly, You Monumental Mistake takes form gradually in layers of interlocking guitars, cellos and keys, that steadily cascade forward and eventually explode into bursts of rock intensity. This track walks the line between ethereal subtlety and aggressive energy.
