ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Each track is as unique and individual as the life experiences that inspired their virtual creation. The title cut, Nothing Between, expresses the underlying theme of a deep and lasting relationship that nothing or nobody can take away. All of the songs on this album were composed and recorded by Ritchie Carbajal. They were performed and carefully crafted on the keyboard using audio samples of real musical instruments except for the alto sax and electric bass on Keep Holding On.

Nothing Between – This is, perhaps, a sequel to Enduring Love (the title cut of my first CD) since it shares the same theme—the tenacity a love that can only be attributed to the eternal God. It is reminiscent of lyrics written by Charles Albert Tindley back in 1905.

Happy Today – A happy song, most definitely! A tune from my childhood—I’m Happy Today—inspired the writing of this jazz original.

Dance and Be Glad – The 7/8 meter coupled with a world beat feel creates an unmistakable mood of celebration and rejoicing. It revisits the innate, spontaneous expression of unspeakable joy that even the God-fearing of ancient times knew very well.

Sing It Again – The repetitive theme underscores the lyrics of an old hymn—Sing Them Over Again to Me. Truly, “wonderful words of life” that can only emanate from the sacrifice of the Giver of life himself are worth singing over and over again.

He Who Overcomes – an actual phrase lifted from the apocalyptic book of Revelation that once brought fear to my soul until I uncovered its true meaning just recently—the confidence to face the final cataclysmic future because of the One who has already overcome!

On Higher Ground – written on February 27, 2010 upon hearing the news of residents of Hawaii being evacuated to higher ground from a possible threat of a tsunami. The theme of the 1892 hymn by Charles H. Gabriel is quoted in this original composition.

My Music Maker – Definitely a one-of-a-kind, the melody of this song was birthed on Facebook from 17 notes suggested by friends in the order they came in: G#, F#, C, Ab, Eb, G, Eb, Bb, F#, E, A, F, G, C, Eb, A#, Eb. It illustrates the beauty that can emerge from even the most unpleasant and painful ‘notes’ of life when placed in the hands of the Master himself.

Peace Like a River – The soothing tone of panpipes and the gentle rocking of the acoustic guitar create the perfect backdrop for this river of peace. The well-known hymn—It is Well With My Soul—inspired the creation of this piece.

Perfect Love – The free meter of this composition is very much like prose in poetry—unhampered by structure yet bold and beautiful. The theme in its variant forms demonstrates a perfect relationship that evolves and thrives under all kinds of circumstances.

David’s Chopin – The music of the songwriter David, aka a man after God’s own heart, probably sounded something like this dance. My daughter, Julia, played the piano excerpts from Chopin’s Waltz in B Minor.

Keep Holding On – This original gospel instrumental has a way of getting the idea across even without words—to keep holding on! My oldest son, Chris, played the electric bass and the alto sax on this piece.

What a Friend – Actually the first song written for this album, it is also the most fitting to end with. Inspired by the hymn What a Friend We Have In Jesus, this melodious composition reflects a calm assurance found nowhere else.
