Notes about the songs on this album:

Open Road-When I think of the open road, I think not so much of speed as freedom. There are so many paths to choose, so many possibilities. I've driven twice across country to start a new phase of my life.

Novembre-This tune from France appears in a book of art songs many beginning voice majors will study. The text I used spoke to the contrast between the vibrance of youth and the introspection of age. As the year moves toward its close, and the church calendar toward Advent our journey becomes more somber.

Emily's Eyes-My Emily is 12 and in her eyes I see innocence, but also uncertainty. She is a beautiful child, just beginning her journey into womanhood.

Mediterranean Moonrise-This is a lullaby I wrote. I think of the moon rising and the quiet of night descending.

Mediterranean Midnight-Based on the same tune as the lullaby, this more sensuous treatment speaks of romance and passion as the night journeys on.

Beneath the Veil-In the quiet moments before the Bridal March begins a father gazes at his daughter and remembers her childhood. In a short while he will escort her down the aisle as she begins her own Journey of the Heart.

The Lone White Bird-This tune appears in various textual settings. The Lone White Bird is about the search for a resting place of the spirit.

My Love Is in America-I took a section of a jig tune, slowed it down and put it in waltz time. I imagine someone remembering a dance with their true love, now gone to another country.

Mary's Journey-Not just the road to Bethlehem, but her journey of understanding the child she carried.

Chasing Snowflakes-Children running around, trying to hold what cannot be kept.

Walk With Me-This combines a plainsong chant with the spiritual "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me". Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, whatever you believe, try not to walk alone.

View from the Cliffs-A few years ago I stood on a cliff above the Atlantic in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, and sang.

Hidden Paths-Sometimes our journey is not what we expected. Sometimes the path is unclear.

My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose-I included this because it is simply one of the most beautiful, simple melodies I've heard. Robert Burns' poetry is well known. "And I will come again, my love, though it were ten thousand mile."

Return of the Arctic Sun-After a winter spent in darkenss, the light appears. At first it is only a glow on the horizon. At last it is full sun, all day and night.

Au Revoir Majorca-Chopin spent the last years of his life with George Sand on the island of Majorca (sometimes spelled Mallorca). Many people think the cold and damp of the winter shortened his life. The left hand pattern of this song is derived from one of the Nocturnes.

I hope the songs on this album will inspire and soothe you as you follow your own heart's journey.

Sobering Beauty
A meticulous songbook of nocturnal piano solos. Deeply profound in its beauty and grace, emotion and integrity. Carrying so much with seemingly so little. Quietly touching, soothing, and soberingly !

Very good technical skill and very sensitive music. Very good for slowing down when you need to relax or think things over. I definitely recommend this album.
