Album Notes
George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Harry James, Billy Strayhorn, Kurt Weill, and Jimmy van Heusen are some of the acknowledged giants of 20th century American popular music, and you'll find them all represented on this album by the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band of Red Wing, Minnesota. James Kurschner's masterful interpretation of the Gershwin classic, "Rhapsody in Blue," accompanied by the brass band, is the centerpeice of the collection and is ably complemented by Kurschner's encore: his own arrangment of a piano solo medley of Gershwin tunes. Glen Newton's swinging arrangement of the American folk song "John Henry" and a three-movement work by one of the giants of 21st-century brass banding, Peter Graham, round out the album.

James Kurschner, the featured piano soloist on "Rhapsody in Blue" has been the Music Director of the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band since 2002. He is a member of the music faculty at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he conducts the concert band and teaches various courses in instrumental music.

Our guest conductor for "Rhapsody in Blue" and Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" is Dr. Michael Halstenson, conductor of the Lake Wobegon (R) Brass Band and director of the orchestra program at Anoka High School as well as the Northern Symphony Orchestra.
