ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
It’s a lot to say about a rock n roll band, but Trick Sensei poses a conceptual puzzle wrapped in stormy, emotive bluster. While the unsuspecting listener may initially be thrown off balance by this collaboration of three songwriters wielding at least that many approaches to the craft, those willing to forgo a narrow path will be rewarded with a moody musical journey powered by interweaving electric guitars, keyboards, theremin and voices.

No Mesmerizer rambles a narrative, zooming in on mundane crises and minu- tiae and out again to encompass psychic allegories and mysterious scenarios. Informed by decades navigating Portland’s fertile experimental, improvisa- tional, postpunk, dream pop and indie rock terrain, this quintet pulses with weirdly familiar nostalgic heat and compelling hooks. Please join us for the release of our fifth album in January 2015.

Band founders Gordon and Boyd began making music with Caputo in 1997, shortly after arriving in Portland (Gordon from NYC, Boyd from Idaho). Trick Sensei was formed with drummer Hutzler in the early 2000s and joined by bassist Chan in 2011. The band plans to play locally and regionally in 2015 in support of No Mesmerizer. They are equally comfortable playing a tight 30 minute opening club set or playing for several hours, digging into an extensive back catalog and extending songs into noise-infused improv sessions.
