ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A musical journey around the world with iconic tunes
FRANCE

The journey begins in Paris and a trip to the ancient area of Ile De La Cite where you board a cruise vessel at Pont Neuf to cruise the River Seine, listen to a tune that is often played by a local band on board the vessel.

• Under Paris Skies/ medley (Jean Brun and Hubert Giraud 1951)

Depart the ferry at Pont Neuf and walk towards the Notre Dame Cathedral to Boulevard Saint Michelle where Edith Piaf used to busk in the street. Her most famous song, "La Vie en Rose" was fist sung by Edith in 1948.

• La Vie en Rose ( Edith Piaf and Louis Gugliemi “Louisguy” 1946)

Journey to Cannes in the south of France and play a tune often used at the Cannes film festival, a tune composed by an African American musician Sidney Bechet. Rue d’Antibes is a main shopping street that runs through Cannes.

• D'ans La Rue d'Antibes (Sidney Bechet 1958)

Most bands in Paris often play this tune called “Minor Swing” composed by a Gypsy Guitar player Django Reinhardt. Django lost most of the use of two fingers in a fire in a caravan he shared with his first wife Bella Mayer. The fire was caused when Django accidentally knocked a candle over which ignited imitation flowers made of celluloid that his wife used to manufacture and sell on the streets of Paris.

• Minor Swing (Django Reinhardt 1937)

HUNGARY

• Csardas (traditional 18th century)

RUSSIA

When you depart France the borders of many countries can be reached in a few hours and when you cross the borders you notice the different cultures and personalities of the populas. It is also evident in their music styles. The music of Russia is very dramatic by comparison to French music. Listen to an example of a Russian-styled tune that was composed by Irving Berlin.

• Russian Lullaby (Irving Berlin 1927)

SPAIN

Journey to Spain and a township called Auranjuez, 48 KM south of Madrid with a population of about 50,000. The township is noted for its strawberries and beautiful palace gardens. A tune called "Concerto De Aranjuez" was written by a blind composer, Joaquin Rodrigo, in Paris in 1939. The tune was hugely popular and the citizens of Aranjuez were so grateful they erected a monument to the tune in the main street and engraved the notation in the footpath. Viva play a this simple version called

• Aranjuez Mon Amour (Joaquin Rodrigo 1939)

DENMARK

Journey to Denmark and listen to "Jealousy" which was written by Jacob Gade of Denmark. It was played for the first time in 1925 in the movie “Son of Zorro” starring Douglas Fairbanks. It was noted, that up until the mid 70's, the tune was played every minute of every day on some radio station in the world. The composer was so revered for this composition that the Danish Government issued a postage stamp in Jacob Gade's honour.

• Jealousy (Jacob Gado 1925)

MEXICO

Listen to a tune about a city in Spain called Granada. The tune was composed by Agustin Lara, a composer and pianist who was born in Mexico. The tune became so popular that Agustin was given the keys to the city and a free house in his home town of Veracruz. Granada was the second most performed tune of the last Century (No 1 was "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas"). Agustin performed his first professional music engagement in a brothel when he was 13 years old.

• Granada (Agustin Lara 1932)

CUBA

Journey to Cuba where Mafia-run night clubs and music entertainment were closed down in 1960 by the government at the end of the Cuban revolution. Ry Cooder, a musician from America went to Cuba in 1996 to search for and record the original Cuban musicians. He organised a group called The Buena Vista Social Club, named after a popular Cuban night club of the 40’s. The group Buena Vista Social Club went on to become hugely popular after their recordings and follow up concerts throughout the world.

Listen to a composition the group has adopted as their signature tune “Siboney”, written by a Cuban Composer, Ernesto Lecuona.

Siboney is a town east of Santiago Cuba where the Cuban revolution began in 1953.
Andalucia is a tune written by the same composer and it is also named "The Breeze and I".

THE PERFORMERS

Peter Rappolt: guitar and flute
Marie Rappolt: accordion, midi keyboard bass

Peter Rappolt began his musical career in the 60’s and was one of the pioneers of surf music in Australia. His composition and recording of "Ski Run" by his band The Echomen reached Australia’s top 10 recordings in October 1963.

In 1969 Peter with his wife Marie formed cabaret bands (Sounds of Lawrence) to perform at military bases in Sth Vietnam. They completed over 400 concerts in Sth Vietnam in 1969-1970 and continued to perform at military bases throughout Thailand, Guam and The Philippines. In 1970, they purchased a nightclub in Bangkok as a home base for their operations throughout SE Asia. They also performed at many 5 star hotels in Thailand, and Japan until 1972. During the mid 70’s Peter and Marie reformed SOL and performed throughout Australia.

Peter and Marie ceased playing music in 1980 and Peter went on to become a plant operator, civil contractor, gold miner, project manager and eventually a land developer.

In 1996 Peter and Marie revitalised their music association and reformed their band with an entirely different music genre. Marie dispensed with her Hammond organ and took up accordion with a specially developed midi bass. Peter took to playing acoustic guitar.
