ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The name Aallotar comes from a character from Finland's national epic "Kalevala." A daughter of the waves, her name has graced the hulls of Finnish ships for centuries – ships that separated our ancestors. One hundred years ago, our families lived within hours of each other in the western regions of Finland, but the immigration of hundreds of thousands of Finns from 1870-1930 put our current families on opposite sides of the Atlantic ocean. However, today we are living in a different kind of world that has brought us closer to each other and made this project possible. With this cd we want to pay tribute to our respective cultures, which - although they pulsate with many of the same values and energy of 100 years ago - have grown apart. The music of Aallotar is an exploration of those differences, with the intent to create new harmonies that bridge the expanses which water has filled.
